SLP Schools Officials Discuss Lilydale Park Tragedy

Representatives with the school district talked about Wednesday's tragic events during a press conference on Thursday, May 23.

Students and staff are going through a wide range of emotions at Peter Hobart Elementary School, only one day after two 4th grade students died in an accident at Lilydale Park in St. Paul.

Principal Shelley Nielsen said the district is unable to release the names of the students at this time—two were killed and two injured in the incident—but said district officials have spoken with the families impacted.

"They are devastated," Nielsen said.

SLP Schools brought in counselors Thursday to talk with students, staff members and parents who need some assistance, which Nielsen said will continue for as long as is necessary.

"For many of our students, this is maybe the very first time they've dealt with a tragedy of this magnitude—losing a classmate or losing anyone at all," Nielsen said. "We're blessed as a community because we've had an enormous amount of support. And that's what's going to get us through each of these days."

Nielsen described the two deceased boys as "outstanding students" who loved life as well as learning. She said both families are very engaged with the elementary school and have been supportive of both the school and community.

"They were feeling heartfelt for our community as we're trying to express our heartfelt emotion to them," Nielsen said.

Superintendent Debra Bowers said it's "an incredibly sad time for our schools and our entire school community."

A fund for the students and families impacted by the tragedy has been established at Citizens Independent Bank in St. Louis Park. Donations to the "Peter Hobart Student Fund" will be accepted at Citizens Independent Bank branches in St. Louis Park, Robbinsdale, Hopkins and Plymouth.
