Cedar Lake Wine & Spirits Closes in West End. Is Liquor Boy to Blame?

Cedar Lake Wine & Spirits, the West End upscale liquor store, closed its doors last week.

Cedar Lake Wine & Spirits, the locally owned, upscale West End liquor store, closed for business last week.

The culprit is likely Liquor Boy, a 10,000 square foot discounter that opened about a year ago just a quarter mile down Cedar Lake Road, according to an article in the Star Tribune about how superstores are pushing out local wine shops.

John Wolf, who opened Liquor Boy, told the paper his store has had twice the revenue he expected.

He said city-owned stores will see the crunch as their prices are challenged by national discounters.

“I’d be nervous if I were a municipal store in Edina, Burnsville or Lakeville,” Wolf told the Star Tribune.

Steve Grausam, the director of operations at Edina’s liquor stores, said Edina saw a drop in sales after Liquor Boy opened, but that the city has since recovered, with revenues up 4 percent so far this year.
