St. Louis Park Site Among Southwest LRT Maintenance Facility Finalists

The Excelsior Boulevard location is one of seven sites the Met Council is moving forward with for a potential Operation and Maintenance Facility, according to Community Development Director Kevin Locke.

UPDATE: The Met Council recently released the full list of candidate sites, which is larger than initially reported. Those sites are: ORIGINAL STORY One St. Louis Park site is among the list of seven finalists for the Southwest LRT Operation and Maintenance Facility (OMF), according to a St. Louis Park official. During a study session on Monday, April 22, St. Louis Park City Council members received an update on the Southwest LRT project from Community Development Director Kevin Locke. Locke reported the Met Council had narrowed its initial list of 18 sites to seven, including one St. Louis Park location. The site is located right on the border of Hopkins and St. Louis Park, sandwiched between Excelsior Boulevard and Cedar Lake Trail. It …

The OMF also serves as a garage since we keep trains/buses indoors in MN. You couldn't fit them all in the existing Franklin Ave (MPLS) and Lowertown (STP) facilities once Southwest is online. Plus you'd have to run a few empty trains from St. Paul ALL the way out to Eden Prairie to get started in the morning. Unseasonable Weather Continues With Winter Weather Advisory

Snow is possible every day until Tuesday.

The prospect of more snow remains even as residents dig out from “Winter Storm Walda” Thursday’s weather closed the Hiawatha light rail, cancelled numerous flights out of the Minneapolis-St. Paul Airport and forced schools to cancel or postpone most sporting events. The winter storm warning expired at 7 p.m. Thursday, but a winter weather advisory remains in effect until noon Friday. “A winter weather advisory for snow means that periods of snow will cause primarily travel difficulties,” according to the National Weather Service. There is an 80 percent chance of snow Friday, mostly until noon. Snow is possible every day until Tuesday.

Weather Service Declares Winter Storm Warning for Metro

Snow will start following in earnest Wednesday night.

(Updated 8:14 a.m. April 9 to show that the National Weather Service had upgraded the winter storm watch to a winter storm warning.) *** The Twin Cities office of the National Weather Service on Tuesday declared a winter storm warning for much of west central and central Minnesota, including Hennepin and Anoka counties. A winter storm warning means “significant amounts of snow, sleet are ice are expected or occuring.” The warning is in effect until 1 p.m. Thursday Some parts of the west central Minnesota could see six to 12 inches of snow fall between Tuesday morning and Thursday morning, according to the National Weather Service.
