Rep. Keith Ellison has invited Sami Rahamim, a St. Louis Park High student and the son of slain Accent Signage owner Reuven Rahamim, to join him for the president’s State of the Union address Feb. 12, Ellison announced at a gun violence forum Thursday in Minneapolis. The 5th District representative and four other Democratic U.S. representatives had earlier urged their colleagues to use the speech to step up pressure for tighter gun control laws by inviting someone hurt by gun violence to the address. The State of the Union Tuesday’s State of the Union speech saw a predictable split between Rep. Keith Ellison (D-MN) and Republican challengers, notably Chris Fields. Throughout the speech, Fields retweeted comments critical of President Barack Obama’s defense strategy and economic proposals. Ellison, on the other hand, praised the president’s comments. “I think that the president was looking at this speech as a way to highlight some of his accomplishments,” Ellison told MinnPost. “He was able to do that, he was able to project a good vision.
