Ellison Praises Egyptian President for Gaza Ceasefire

Ellison had previously decried the violence.

As Israel and the Palestinian faction Hamas accepted a ceasefire four days ago and stood down their respective armed forces after a multi-day exchange of rockets and bombs, Rep. Keith Ellison (D-MN) expressed cautious hope for the future. "If Hamas & Israel can negotiate ceasefire, prisoner exchange, they can negotiate peace. W/o negotiation for durable peace, we'll be back," his campaign tweeted last week. As the violence began to spiral out of control a week before, Ellison had denounced both sides and called for an immediate ceasefire, according to the Huffington Post. Ellison Writes Letter to Hamas Leader Urging Release of Israeli Soldier

St. Louis Park's congressional representative has joined other Muslims in an appeal to the militant group.

Rep. Keith Ellison (D-MN) and a group of "high profile U.S. Muslims" recently sent a letter to Hamas leader Khaled Mashaal urging him to release Israeli soldier Gilad Shalit, who has been held captive since 2006, according to a Tuesday Star Tribune article. The letter is a direct plea to Hamas: "Hamas' inhumane detention of Shalit undermines the Palestinian people's legitimate aspirations for human rights and a state of their own," the letter said. "We believe Hamas' harsh treatment and five-year detention of Shalit is wrong." The letter coalition was made up of 11 Muslim leaders, including the two Muslim members of Congress, Ellison and Indiana Rep.
