Weather Service Declares Winter Storm Warning for Metro

Snow will start following in earnest Wednesday night.

(Updated 8:14 a.m. April 9 to show that the National Weather Service had upgraded the winter storm watch to a winter storm warning.) *** The Twin Cities office of the National Weather Service on Tuesday declared a winter storm warning for much of west central and central Minnesota, including Hennepin and Anoka counties. A winter storm warning means “significant amounts of snow, sleet are ice are expected or occuring.” The warning is in effect until 1 p.m. Thursday Some parts of the west central Minnesota could see six to 12 inches of snow fall between Tuesday morning and Thursday morning, according to the National Weather Service. SLP is in a Winter Storm Warning Starting at Midnight Sunday

The National Weather Service in Chanhassen has upgraded the winter storm watch to a warning. The amount of expected snow has increased.

Updated 12:30 p.m. Sunday: St. Louis Park now is in a winter storm warning instead of a watch. The National Weather Service (NWS) in Chanhassen issued the warning at about 11 a.m. Sunday.  "A winter storm warning for heavy snow means severe winter weather conditions are expected or occurring," according to the warning. "Significant amounts of snow are forecast that will make travel dangerous. Only travel in an emergency. If you must travel, keep an extra flashlight, food and water in your vehicle in case of an emergency." Now 6 to 12 inches of snow are forecast from midnight Sunday to 6 p.m. Tuesday. Wind Chill Advisory Extended to 9 a.m. Wednesday; Snow is Coming Thursday

The winter storm watch starts Thursday night and continues through Friday afternoon.

Updated 10 p.m. Feb. 19: The National Weather Service has extended the wind chill advisory until 9 a.m. Wednesday. *** Updated 9 p.m. Feb. 19: The wind chill advisory in St. Louis Park has been extended to 6 a.m. Wednesday, according to the National Weather Service (NWS). Wind chills could be as low as -23 on Wednesday, and -14 Thursday. As of Tuesday afternoon, the NWS is predicting 3 to 5 inches of snow Thursday night and 1 to 3 inches Friday. High Winds and More Snow Forecast Monday in St. Louis Park

The Minnesota State Patrol responded to more than 200 crashes and almost 400 spinouts as of 4:30 p.m. Sunday.

Updated 11 p.m. Feb. 10: A weather spotter reported 2 inches of snow at 1:18 p.m. Sunday. No SLP snow totals have been submitted since then, according to the National Weather Service. However, at 9:30 p.m. about 2.5 inches were reported in Edina. So SLP should reach 3 inches of snow overnight. If we receive more than 3 inches of snow, remember to move your vehicles from the streets so city workers can plow. The National Weather Service says on Monday it will be "blustery, with a west northwest wind 15 to 20 mph, with gusts as high as 30 mph." More snow is expected before noon. UPDATE: Winter Storm Warning Issued For SLP, Twin Cities and Beyond

The National Weather Service forecasts that as many as 7 inches of snow could fall over the weekend.

Weather service forecasters believe as many as seven inches of snow could fall on Saturday and Sunday. Windy conditions may lead to blowing and drifting snow and "near-blizzard" conditions in open areas, forecasters say. Forecasters are also calling for 1 to 3 inches of snow accumulation on Friday afternoon and evening.
