New Restaurant, Art Studio Concept Coming to West End

Brush Studio will let customers enjoy a quick dinner, then follow step-by-step directions from an artist to create their own painting.

A unique new business is coming to St. Louis Park's West End, combining a restaurant with the atmosphere of an art studio to create what owners refer to as "a paint a sip concept." Owner David Forbes appeared before the St. Louis Park City Council last week for an on-sale wine and liquor license for the business, set to be known as Brush Studio. It will be located at 1651 Park Place Boulevard, in a 2,200-square-foot space inside the Shops at West End. Forbes said the idea is for customers to come in an enjoy a meal from "a simple dinner menu of sandwiches," then spend the rest of the evening following step-by-step instructions from an artist to create an identical version of that night's work of art. "It's not like the guy on PBS who …

Drunk Woman Causes Epic Scene at SLP Bar

Prospective patron became angry after being denied admittance at Toby Keith's I Love This Bar & Grill.

This might be one for the record books. On Dec. 27, a 5-foot, 3-inch, 130-pound woman decided to take on a 6-foot, 2-inch, 250-pound bouncer at Toby Keith’s I Love This Bar & Grill, according to a report filed by officers with the St. Louis Park Police Department. Around 11 p.m., the woman cruised up to the bar door and attempted to get in. According to police, the bouncer on duty at the door denied her admittance, as she was “very drunk.” This did not sit well with the 24-year old Zumbrota, MN, resident. According to the 28-year old bouncer, she punched him in the chest multiple times and attempted to kick him in the groin. Police, who were already on the scene for an unrelated call, heard the commotion and came over. At this point, a …

Drunk Man Walks Into Hotel Nearly Naked, Claims Theft

The 23-year old Minnetonka resident was missing more than just his passport.

Early in the morning on Oct. 28, a nearly-naked man showed up in the lobby of the West End Doubletree Suites.  According to a report filed by officers with the St. Louis Park Police Department, front desk staff called for help around 3:15 a.m. when the "heavily intoxicated" 23-year old Minnetonka resident lurched in. He couldn't remember how he arrived at the hotel, and was wearing only a shirt, underwear, and flip-flops.  Much later that day, the now-sober and presumably chagrined young man walked into police headquarters to report a missing Indian passport, iPhone 4, multiple credit cards, and a pair of pants. According to the police report, his last coherent memory was of leaving the Loon Cafe in Downtown Minneapolis' Warehouse District…

Hardware Store to Replace SLP Supervalu

Almsted's Supervalu is set to close on Sept. 17.

As one St. Louis Park business closes, another one will be relocating from across town to fill the space. Jerry's Do It Best Hardware will be moving from the Miracle Mile on Excelsior Boulevard to take over the building currently occupied by Almsted’s Supervalu Foods, which is set to close on Sept. 17, according to the owner. Ben Steinberg, a principal with Tri Star Management, which owns the property, said he expects Jerry's to move into the 12,600 square-foot space by early October and hopefully open sometime in December. The change will mark the end of a 14-year run for Almsted's Supervalu at the corner of Louisiana Avenue and Cedar Lake Road. Management said the store was "losing money every week" since Rainbow Foods opened at the West…

@guy davidson - tell that to Settergrens or the Frattalones - big box has it's place but I never go to home hardware without finding what I need and it's close. Only downside is he's closed on Sundays. Jerry's do it best ought to find a nice little sweetspot in that location.   more ›

St. Louis Park Supervalu to Close

The store has struggled since Rainbow opened at the West End.

Almsted’s Supervalu Foods in St. Louis Park will be closing by the end of September, the store manager said Monday. Manager Mark Ditter said the grocery store has been “losing money every week” since Rainbow Foods opened at the nearby West End shopping area about two years ago. “We were doing OK until that opened,” Ditter said. Supervalu, which has been in its current location at the intersection of Lousiana Avenue and Cedar Lake Road since 1997, employs 25 people, Ditter said. The manager said the store will work to get some of them jobs with another Almsted’s Supervalu in Crystal and get other employees jobs with other grocery stores in the area. Check back with St. Louis Park Patch for updates to this story.

What's happening to our neighborhood? The addition of the Dollar Store and now the demise of Almsteds. It's becoming more and more tacky. I'm almost afraid to see what comes next in that space. I'll miss all the hard working people at Almsteds. It's difficult to find service like that anymore.   more ›
