Snow is expected to be heaviest after 3 p.m. Wednesday. The winter storm warning has been extended until 7 p.m. Thursday.
As forecasters predicted, Twin Cities residents awoke Wednesday to find a dusting of snow and ice on local roads, making for yet another messy springtime commute. Snow fell overnight on top of crusty ice, and it didn’t take long for crashes and spinouts to start. At 4:46 a.m., the Minnesota Department of Transportation kicked off metro crash reports with a crash on Interstate 394, at Interstate 494 and Highway 12 in Minnetonka. Total snowfall was minimal and stopped before morning rush hour began in earnest, but weather will worsen Wednesday afternoon. Snow is likely after 3 p.m., according to the National Weather Service. HousingLink data highlights how uneven affordable housing availability can be.
Paying for rental housing is no easy proposition in Minnesota. Last month, the National Low Income Housing Coalition’s annual Out of Reach report ranked the state worst in the Midwest and 24th nationally. A breakdown of the report by the Minnesota Housing Partnership estimated that 54 percent of renters can’t afford a modest two-bedroom apartment. But apartments can have a hard time winning neighbors over even when they don’t specifically serve low-income renters—as recent debates have shown. In St. Louis Park, some residents criticized the proposed Eliot Park Apartments development that would build two new apartment buildings with a total of 138 units on Cedar Lake Road. The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Weather Advisory for the metro area through 1 a.m. Tuesday, Mar. 19.
So much for the luck of the Irish. Another helping of snow is on its way to the Twin Cities, according to forecasters with the National Weather Service. The NWS has issued a winter weather advisory for much of the state, with estimates of 3-5 inches of snow set to fall over the metro area before 1 a.m. Tuesday, Mar. 19. Meteorologists expect the late season winter storm to "bring a quick burst of 2 to 5 inches of snow" through early Monday, with the weather system lingering over the metro through much of the day. Blizzard conditions are likely across western, southerns and portions of central Minnesota into late Monday night, with powerful northwest winds gusting around 50 mph. Residents must keep their vehicles off the road until streets are plowed curb to curb.
The heavy snowfall overnight prompted St. Louis Park to declare a parking ban in effect just before 1 a.m. The city declares a parking ban as soon as snow accumulation reaches three inches—whatever time of day that happens to be. On-street parking is prohibited any time during a parking ban until streets have been plowed curb to curb.
