Where in the Park?

Can You Identify This Retro St. Louis Park Photo?

We test your local knowledge with an old-school pic.

Folks have been having a lot of fun with the retro photos here on SLP Patch, so let's give it another go this week. The photo above—which comes from the awesome Facebook group "Flasbacks of St. Louis Park"—was snapped somewhere in St. Louis Park. Your job is to guess where. You can post your guess in the comments below.

What's in a (Street) Name?

With a St. Louis Park street set to get renamed, it seems like a good time for some trivia on local streets.

St. Louis Park is getting a new street—sort of. At the request of Beth El Synagogue, 25 1/2 Street West—which is located just north of the synagogue—will be renamed Barry Street West, in honor of donors Charles and Melanie Barry (namesakes of the Barry Family Campus at the Sabes JCC). City Council approved the change unanimously at a meeting last week, and new signage is expected to be up in about a month. This name change got us thinking about St. Louis Park street names in general, which got us thinking about something fun—trivia! Check out our 10 questions on SLP street names, then post your answers in the comments below.

My point is that your question was faulty. It should have read: "What street is named for a book about a fictitious Civil War battle?" BTW--I found a copy of the book online currently for sale for $2,000. Autographed by the author with an inscription to his friend, Robert Frost.   more ›

56 Years and Counting: A History of SLP HS

In honor of Saturday's All-Year Reunion, we look at seven decades at Park High.

The St. Louis Park High School All-Year Reunion is Saturday (don't have tickets yet? Get them online), so it seems appropriate to look at the school that made it all possible, with help from the St. Louis Park Historical Society. The current high school opened in 1956. The land had previously been used as a skating rink, although several houses on the west side of the property had to be removed to make room. Before the high school moved into this new building, it was housed in what is now the Central Community Center/Park Spanish Immersion. At the time, the Central building housed both junior high and senior high students, so naturally things got a bit crowded. As the historical society notes: Conditions were so crowded that in the 1954-55…

The Park's Past

108 Years Ago, a Tornado Hits St. Louis Park

Three Park residents were killed in the Aug. 20, 1904, storm.

On Aug. 20, 1904, a deadly tornado started in South Dakota and made its way through St. Louis Park, killing three local residents. In all, 14 people died in the storm, the St. Louis Park Historical Society reports. According to Hennepin County Emergency Management, winds from the storm hit 110 mph in St. Paul—the highest official wind speed ever recorded in Minnesota of more than one minute. The historical society notes that the damage was extensive: The storm continued on to St. Paul and Stillwater. Significant damage was done to both downtown Minneapolis and St. Paul. In the Park, the storm heavily damaged the Sugar Company, Malleable Iron Works, Fosston, Monitor, the Peavy and Great Western Elevators, and 20 houses. The St. Louis Park …

It's a Blast From St. Louis Park's Past on Facebook

A new group is taking a trip down memory lane.

Have an old class photo you've been dying to share? Or maybe you just want to reminisce about a trip to the Lincoln Del? A new—and rapidly growing—Facebook group is here to help. Nearly 5,000 people have joined "Flashbacks of St. Louis Park," a group that is described as such: "A fun place to add photos, reminisce, and share your memories of the past in St Louis Park." A combination of pop culture memories, old class photos and plenty of lively banter, the group has clearly struck a chord with many Parkites. For instance, Gary Perna, one of the group's seven administrators, recently posted: "(Where) was the best burger or place to go for a good burger in SLP back in the day?" That triggered 52 comments worth of friendly debate. "The Old …

(PHOTOS) SLP Celebrates 125th Birthday in Style

The St. Louis Park Historical Society hosted Sunday's event.

On a perfectly sunny fall afternoon, residents, past mayors and a few other special guests helped celebrate the 125th anniversary of St. Louis Park incorporating as a village. The Sunday event, held at the Veterans Memorial Amphitheater, included a declaration from Mayor Jeff Jacobs and a few words from U.S. Sen. Amy Klobuchar (D-MN). Former mayors took the stage as well. The city's first female mayor, Phyllis McQuaid, gave a rousing speech about how she first moved to St. Louis Park 50 years ago. Paul Howard, son of the late Frank Howard, who was mayor from 1970 to 1972, talked about how much his father enjoyed serving the community. The crowd also saluted former mayors Camille Andre, Lyle Hanks and Gail Dorfman. Entertainment was …
