Several Local Teams Figure to Make Runs at State Titles

Topping the list is the Benilde-St. Margaret's girls basketball squad, which won the Class 3A crown last year.

For many, “March Madness” is a reference to the popular annual college basketball tournament. But March madness is also an apt description for Minnesota high school sports at the moment, as state tournament season is in full swing. With that in mind, St. Louis Park Patch brings you a quick guide of what’s going on — and whether any local teams or athletes are in the running. Boys swimming: St. Louis Park junior Erik McCague finished 12th in the Class AA 100-yard butterfly preliminaries on Friday night, which will send him to Saturday's consolation finals. Meanwhile, Benilde-St. Margaret’s swimmers Jack McGinn and Parker Johnson advanced to Saturday's Class A finals. Boys hockey: St. Louis Park will not be represented at the Xcel Energy …

SLIDESHOW: St. Louis Park Sending One Swimmer to State

The Orioles did not qualify for state as a team, but Erik McCague will be going in the 100-yard butterfly.

St. Louis Park finished sixth in the boys Section 6AA Swimming and Diving meet Saturday, which was not good enough to send the team to state. However, junior Erik McCague will be going to the state individual meet in the 100-yard butterfly. Minnetonka placed first in the meet, held at the Art Downey Aquatic Center in Edina. The team will be sending eight swimmers to the individual state meet at the University of Minnesota Aquatic Center on Thursday. Ednia finished third in the meet and will be sending six swimmers to the state meet. Both Edina's Max Cartwright and Mike Gratz took home first place medals in their individual events Saturday. Rivalry Game Highlights Local Sports Schedule

The Benilde-St. Margaret's boys basketball team will also be opening conference play.

It’s a relatively light schedule in local sports tonight, but there is one rivalry game on tap: The St. Louis Park Orioles and Benilde-St. Margaret’s Red Knights will both feel like home teams as the two schools do battle in girls hockey at the St. Louis Park Rec Center. Game time is 7 p.m. While the Orioles are just 3-12-1 on the season, Benilde is 12-2-1 and ranked fourth in the state. The Red Knights also won the Schwan Cup Blue Division championship last week.  So, signs would point to an easy Benilde victory, but you never know in rivalry games. Benilde will also be looking for a win on the hardwood, as the boys basketball team takes on Columbia Heights at home. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:15 p.m. The squad was last in action in a …
