SLP High School's New Turf Field Unveiled

The Orioles will be playing on FieldTurf this year.

Follow SLP Patch on Twitter | Like us on Facebook | Sign up for our daily newsletter St. Louis Park High School unveiled its new state-of-the-art artificial turf field during a Saturday afternoon ceremony. The roughly $1 million field was made by FieldTurf, a company that athletic director Andy Ewald called an industry leader. "FieldTurf is the 800-pound gorilla in the turf business," he said in a previous interview. Super Bowl XLVI in February was held on a FieldTurf field in Indianapolis. Ewald said the new field will be safer and will get more use than the old grass field, as synthetic turf is much more durable. He also said Park was at a competitive disadvantage using a grass field, as nearby schools such as Hopkins, Minnetonka and …

Catching Up With...Former Park Teacher Darold 'Deb' Wold

He taught for 32 years and also had great success as a basketball coach.

Editor's Note: With the first ever St. Louis Park High School All-Year Reunion approaching on Saturday, we're helping kick things off with a week's worth of stories. Today, we profile former Park teacher Darold "Deb" Wold. Earlier this week, we featured the St. Louis Park Public Schools Foundation, which is putting on the event. Later this week, look for more interviews with former Park teachers, as well as a history of the high school. *** Chatting with Darold Wold is like opening a basketball encyclopedia. Wold, nicknamed "Deb" by his grandfather, is quick to relay a story of Jim Petersen as an eighth-grader, or of the two state titles won by the St. Louis Park girls over a four-year span. For 34 years, Wold coached at Park in a variety …

Young SLP Boys Lacrosse Program Finds Success

In just five years, St. Louis Park has won two titles and has been runner-up twice at the club level.

If you go to the St. Louis Park High School athletics department website, you won’t see boys lacrosse listed. But that doesn’t mean Park isn’t making waves in the sport. St. Louis Park happens to have a club team, which formed in 2007. The squad isn’t officially affiliated with the high school—or the Minnesota State High School League, for that matter. Instead, Park is in the Minnesota Boys Scholastic Lacrosse Association. The Orioles have done quite well in the MBSLA, having won league titles in 2008 and 2010, and finishing second in 2009 and 2011. “The last five years haven’t been that bad,” coach and St. Louis Park Lacrosse Association founder Kevin Reed said. Reed got his start in the Hopkins program, where he both played and later …
