District officials opted to install an unspecified number of cameras near school buildings as a security measure.
The tragic shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Connecticut is reportedly causing St. Louis Park schools to re-examine their own security plans and procedures. The Sun Sailor reports district officials have conducted five annual lockdown drills so far this school year—which is the state mandate. Visitors to SLP schools are also required to use an intercom system to gain entrance to school buildings. Perhaps the biggest change is an increase in the number of cameras near district buildings, courtesy of district health and safety funds. With another legislative session just around the corner, senators and representatives have no shortage of challenges ahead of them. Lawmakers plan to convene hearings on gun control in the wake of the school shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary in Newtown, CT. They’ll review a recommendation from a governor-appointed task force to increase gas taxes and tab fees in response to a projected $50 billion shortfall in transportation funding. The DFL majority and defeat of the marriage amendment in the 2012 election could even prompt the Legislature to take up the issue of gay marriage. Patch websites in Minnesota will go dark for a moment Friday morning to honor the memory of those killed one week ago at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, CT. The brief Patch blackout is set for 8:30 a.m. CST on Friday, Dec. 21, 2012. Gov. Mark Dayton has called for a moment of silence in Minnesota one hour later, at 9:30 a.m. CST. In his statement (click on PDF thumbnail), Dayton also asked places of worship and government buildings that have bells to ring them 26 times "in honor of each life that was taken far too soon at Sandy Hook Elementary School."
