The city will feel the effects of some of the 280 projects statewide.
St. Louis Park residents will feel the effects of the Minnesota Department of Transportation’s $1.1 billion 2013 road construction season. Recently, MnDOT announced road closings and detours from 280 construction projects—87 projects in the metro and 193 projects in greater Minnesota. At their Dec. 3 meeting, St. Louis Park officials OK'd replacing old bridges that span the highway.
The St. Louis Park City Council recently approved a long-discussed project to replace old bridges over Highway 100. The $80 million project would widen the Minnetonka Boulevard bridge, pushing out exits and making the area a traditional diamond interchange (see attached PDF). This would mean no more exiting onto Vernon Avenue near the Holiday station, for instance, before actually getting onto Minnetonka. Instead, direct connections between Highway 100 and Minnetonka would be established. Additionally, the exit and entrance ramps on the west side of Highway 100 at the Highway 7 interchange would be revised, and noisewalls would be added along the route. They met with St. Louis Park staff and MnDOT officials to talk about concerns regarding the upcoming bridge at Highway 7 and Louisiana Avenue.
A group of business owners expressed serious concerns about the upcoming Highway 7 and Louisiana Avenue Interchange Project set to begin this spring. The intersection is currently plagued with congestion and safety problems, which the project is expected to address. Pedestrian and bicycle paths could also be improved to accommodate the increase in traffic from the future LRT station along Louisiana Avenue. Business owners met with city officials and Minnesota Department of Transportation engineers to learn more about the project, proposed detours and the resources available to help businesses through the construction. Here is a list of some of the projects that might impact motorists traveling through the metro for Memorial Day weekend, according to the Minnesota Department of Transportation (MnDOT) and area cities.
