Benilde-St. Margaret's Young Softball Team Still Has Lofty Goals

The Red Knights are finding their way after graduating five seniors from a year ago

Benilde-St. Margaret’s softball coach Adrian Wagner knows what the onlookers will say. The Red Knights are a new-look team in 2011—more than half of last year’s starting lineup that went 14-10 overall and tied for third in the North Suburban Conference graduated. From the outside, this is a green group. “Everyone’s going to say it’s a rebuilding year,” Wagner said. “We graduated five starters, and then three seniors who probably would have started didn’t come out for various reasons ... A lot of new faces this year.” But that isn’t deterring Wagner from having lofty ambitions for this group—it will just take time to develop. The Red Knights admittedly struggled on the field in their Spring Break trip to Florida, then fell 9-5 to Irondale …

Orioles Girls Fall in Season Opener

Despite 3-2 loss, St. Louis Park girls hockey team showing improvement from last year's winless season.

Before the weekend, St. Louis Park assistant girls hockey coach Steve Rosen noticed a change in the team this year. "They're more mature as hockey players," he said. "A lot of the girls played together this summer." The Orioles' growth was evident Saturday night, even though they lost 3-2 to the host St. Paul Blades at Gustafson Phalen Arena in the season-opener for both teams. The game was close throughout and grew more physical as time progressed. It was a change from last season's game between the two teams, which the Blades won easily, 8-4, during a season in which the Orioles went 0-24. Still, the Orioles couldn't beat the Blades.
