Then and Now: A Look at Last Year's Tornado in Photos

The twister touched down a year ago today in St. Louis Park, then moved north through Golden Valley, Minneapolis and Fridley.

One year ago today, a tornado touched down in St. Louis Park near the intersection of highways 394 and 100, eventually moving north into Golden Valley, Fridley and Minneapolis. St. Louis Park was spared the worst of the twister, as the storm intensified as it moved into Minneapolis, causing widespread damage in North Minneapolis. Still, there was damage in the Park. Power was knocked out at the Sabes Jewish Community Center. The Nestle Healthcare Nutrition facility sprung a gas leak and sustained roof damage. And the Cedar Trails Condominiums in the 4500 block of Cedar Lake Road took the brunt of the storm in SLP, as a number of units were hit by fallen trees and other debris. This included the residence of Victor Valdez, who was inside …

Looking Back: Tracking the 2011 Tornado

The twister traveled 14.25 miles from St. Louis Park into Fridley and beyond.

It was around 2:13 in the afternoon on May 22, 2011, when an EF-0 tornado touched down in St. Louis Park, near the intersection of highways 394 and 100. According to the National Weather Service, the twister would be on the ground for about 14.25 miles, moving north through Golden Valley, Minneapolis and Fridey. This took about 10 minutes. Several businesses and condominium units sustained damage in St. Louis Park, but the city by-and-large avoided the worst of the storm. As the tornado made its way, it intensified, going from an EF-0 to an EF-1 as it entered Minneapolis. Up to this point, most of the damage was due to downed trees falling and hitting homes or vehicles, but the stronger storm began demolishing garages and sheds, and …

The Fifth District Report

Fields: Ellison Ignores North Minneapolis

The Fifth District Republican challenger argues that last May's tornado highlighted Ellison's ineffectiveness.

Chris Fields, the Fifth District Republican challenger to incumbent Rep. Keith Ellison (D-MN), took to the Star Tribune opinion section to criticize Ellison's focus on North Minneapolis. In the commentary piece, posted Sunday, Fields argues that Ellison has continually ignored the area, especially in the aftermath of last May's tornado: A continual lack of focus by U.S. Rep. Keith Ellison, a Democrat representing the Fifth District, led to a failure in making the case for the North Side in Washington. Who else is there to make the case? Instead, Ellison focuses on issues in the Middle East concerning Palestinians, Syrians and Egyptians. They are not the 99 percent of constituents, are they? Fields says there were issues in the area before …

No Keith Ellison does not live up to his motto, "Everybody Counts Everybody Matters". He and other politicians serve only a small group of voters and I for one will not advocate for him again for office. That is me in a picture with him(SEIU 26, during his first run for office) and I will never stand by another politician again, because once in office the politician agenda changes. Mr. Ellison …   more ›
