BSM Boys Hockey Gets Slick Highlight Reel

The Red Knights won the state championship earlier this month.

When you win a state championship, you deserve a little highlight-reel recognition. The Benilde-St. Margaret's boys hockey team has received just that, as SplayBack.com put together a Red Knights' highlight reel, which you can watch above. The video chronicles BSM's emotional run through the section playoffs, including the big section final win over Minnetonka. After that game, Jack Jablonski—a BSM sophomore who sustained a serious spinal cord injury during a game on Dec. 30—is shown celebrating on the ice with his teammates. You can hear the crowd chanting "Jabby! Jabby!" Highlights of BSM's wins over Edina, Lakeville South and Hill-Murray to capture the state championship wrap up the video.

Should Jabs Have Been on Ice After BSM Won State?

Jack Jablonski did not participate in the ceremony due to MSHSL rules.

Benilde-St. Margaret's victory in the Class 2A boys hockey tournament on Saturday is deservedly getting plenty of attention, but many fans are also talking about what happened—or, more specifically, didn't happen—after the game. Jack Jablonski, the BSM sophomore hockey player who sustained a serious spinal cord injury during a game on Dec. 30, was not on the ice to celebrate with the Red Knights and receive a medal. Dave Stead, the executive director of the Minnesota State High School League, offered this explanation on the MSHSL Facebook page: A number of people have asked questions about why Jack Jablonski was not on the ice for the award ceremony on Saturday night. Jack was not listed as a member of the official roster, but the League …

Sentiment should never trump common sense. In this case, putting Jack's 2m. insurance policy at risk flies in the face of the advice of anyone who has even the slightest knowlege of insurance regulations. Advocating for such a foolhardy action is selfish and entirely self-serving.   more ›

BSM Wins State Hockey Championship

The Red Knights topped Hill-Murray on Saturday night.

Benilde-St. Margaret's won the boys Class 2A State Hockey Championship on Saturday with a 5-1 win over Hill-Murray at the Xcel Energy Center. The Red Knights had won two Class A championships, but this is their first 2A title. Junior Grant Besse scored all five goals for BSM—two in the first period, one in the second and one more in the third. “He just wrote himself into state tournament history,” head coach Ken Pauly told the BSM Knight Errant. To top it off, the spectacular performance came in front of a crowd of 17,000. “I don’t know if you can really put words to it,” Besse told the Knight Errant. The win caps an amazing run for BSM, fueled by the emotion of playing to honor teammate Jack Jablonski, who sustained a serious spinal cord …

Whew, What a Wild Night at the X

Benilde-St. Margaret's advanced to the semifinals with a 3-2 win over Edina on Thursday.

Whew. That was the only reaction I could muster after last night's wild state tournament game between Benilde-St. Margaret's and Edina, won by BSM on a goal with 23.9 seconds remaining. It was an exhilarating, back-and-forth contest, which was completely up in the air until the final horn. And before Christian Horn netted the game winner, it actually seemed like Edina would escape, as the Hornets had a power play with three minutes left in a 2-2 game. Now, the Red Knights will take on Lakeville South tonight in the state semifinals. Puck drops at 8 p.m. Before then, a quick look at some noteworthy developments during a wild Thursday at the Xcel Energy Center: BSM did not play Lakeville South this year. However, the Red Knights did play …

BSM Tops Edina, Advances to State Semis

Christian Horn scored the game-winner with 23.9 seconds left.

Editor's Note: This article orginally credited Christian Horn with two goals. He scored once. The article has been corrected, and we regret the error. With Jack Jablonski watching from the upper-level of the Xcel Energy Center, Christian Horn scored the biggest goal of his career. The Benilde-St. Margaret's senior lit the lamp with 23.9 seconds left in a state tournament quarterfinal matchup with Edina, sending the Red Knights into Friday's semifinal against Lakeville South with a 3-2 win over the Hornets. After the game, Horn gave a shoutout to Jablonski, his BSM teammate who sustained a serious spinal cord injury during a game on Dec. 30. "Jack, we love you man. Keep battling," Horn said. "This is all for you." Horn's goal came on a …

(VIDEO) BSM Rallies Before Tourney Opener

The Red Knights take on Edina tonight at 8 p.m.

Coach Ken Pauly didn't mince words about Minnetonka, and he didn't forget to tell Benilde-St. Margaret's students how much their support has meant to his team. Pauly, the head coach of the BSM boys hockey team, spoke during a Wednesday celebration of all of BSM's winter state tournament participants to date. Pauly's squad will face Edina in the opening round of the Class 2A hockey tournament tonight at 8 p.m. You can see our complete game preview here. The coach said the state tournament isn't just about his team, but about the whole school, and the strength everyone has shown in the wake of Jack Jablonski's injury. Pauly also said it was nice to get some revenge on Minnetonka in the section finals, after the Skippers' fans taunted the …

Hockey Preview: BSM vs. Edina at State

The puck will drop at 8 p.m.

After a long season marked by the tragic injury to Jack Jablonski and a spirited section finals win over Minnetonka, Benilde-St. Margaret's will take the Xcel Energy Center ice tonight in the state tournament. The Red Knights will play Edina at 8 p.m. in arguably the most talked about game of the first round. Many in the hockey community figure that BSM will be the sentimental favorite of the tournament because of Jablonski, the sophomore who sustained a serious spinal cord injury in a game on Dec. 30. Here, then, is a quick preview of tonight's big game: BSM Key Players Edina Key Players

BSM Draws Edina in State Tourney Opener

The Red Knights and Hornets will face-off in Thursday's 8 p.m. nightcap.

Having knocked off No. 2 Minnetonka just to get to the state tournament, the Benilde-St. Margaret's boys hockey team has another tough road ahead. The No. 6 Red Knights will open against No. 4 Edina in the first round of the Class 2A tournament Thursday at 8 p.m. at the Xcel Energy Center. The two teams did not meet during the regular season. A victory over the Hornets would give BSM a likely semifinal matchup with the state's top team, Duluth East. The Greyhounds lost only once all season, falling to Minnetonka on Jan. 21. That semifinal game would be on Friday at 8 p.m. The state tournament championship is scheduled for Saturday at 7 p.m. A full bracket for the tournament can be found on the Minnesota State High School League's website. …
