St. Louis Park Patch reviews the year that was by counting down the most talked about local stories of 2011.
Editor's Note: With 2011 winding down, we're using this last week of the year to look back at the five stories that shaped St. Louis Park over the past 12 months and had people talking. Today, we look at story No. 5—the fall election. Look for story No. 4 tomorrow. It was a year of certain change for the City Council and school board, as two council incumbents—Paul Omodt and Phil Finkelstein—along with board member Rolf Peterson announced they wouldn't be running again. For Finkelstein and Peterson, spending more time with family was the deciding factor. Omodt said attacks directed toward him and his family compelled him to leave the race. When the dust settled, Steve Hallfin and Jake Spano had won the open council seats, while Joe …

St. Louis Park got two new City Council members and a new school board member on Tuesday.
While nearby Golden Valley saw a bit of a shakeup Tuesday night when challenger Shep Harris beat four-term incumbent Linda Loomis for the mayor's seat, St. Louis Park's election provided no such changing of the guard. Newcomers Steve Hallfin and Jake Spano won two open council seats, while Joe Tatalovich joined three incumbents in winning spots on the school board. Of course, only time will tell how these three mesh with their respective colleagues and what policy decisions will emerge. But an educated guess would suggest that St. Louis Park won't be in for a drastic change. On arguably the biggest issue facing the city—the proposed freight rail reroute—Hallfin and Spano have voiced opposition. So did the current council, by a 6-1 vote in …

Communities like ours are defined by a number of things and the quality of our schools is at the top of that list. St. Louis Park is fortunate to have an outstanding public school system and we need people to look to the future to ensure they stay that way. It is not and will not be an easy job. Joe Tatalovich has what it takes to put in the hard work and future vision to make sure all the learners in SLP get the best education at whatever level they may be, whether that is in the K-12 program or in Community Education or somewhere else. Joe knows that education is a lifetime endeavor and has the skills we need on our Board to make sure SLP remains a leader in education and quality of life for the coming generations and the ones who are …

The St. Louis Park School Board election is Nov. 8.
Editor's Note: This week, we will introduce you to the five school board candidates with Q&A articles. Look for a new article every morning through Friday. The school board election is on Nov. 8 and four seats are up for grabs. St. Louis Park Patch: Why did you decide to run? Joe Tatalovich: I want to make sure that the strong schools that we have today continue into the future. My kids are 2 and a half and 11 months, so I want to get involved early. And I’ve been involved in a lot of committees in leadership roles. I just want to be more involved in policy discussions. I think I offer a perspective that’s different from the other candidates and the current board, in that a lot of the current board has had kids go all the way through the …

Two incumbents have hopped in the race.
With the St. Louis Park City Council primary set for today, the local school board election is also starting to take shape. To date, incumbents Nancy Gores and Julie Sweitzer have filed as candidates. Joe Tatalovich has also filed, as expected. Gores and Sweitzer have both been on the board since 2004, with Sweitzer currently serving as chair. Tatalovich unsuccessfully ran for school board four years ago. The candidate filing period lasts through Aug. 16. Four school board members will then be elected during the general election on Nov. 8.
