Devon McFerrin is accused of selling a Hopkins man the heroin that killed him.
The Hennepin County Sheriff’s Office has added a suspected Minneapolis drug dealer to its Top Ten Most Wanted List, the agency announced Friday. Devon McFerrin, 31, is accused of selling a Hopkins man the heroin that killed him following a February 2012 overdose. The County Attorney’s Office has charged McFerrin with third-degree murder, a charge in which the selling of drugs results in someone’s death. The cost of colonoscopies, MRIs, CT scans and mammograms can shift a lot from place to place.
It costs $120 more to get an MRI in Hennepin County than in neighboring Ramsey County. That's according to data from New Choice Health, a private company that encourages people to become smarter healthcare consumers. Hennepin County tends to cost more than Ramsey County in all three categories for which the data is available: CT scans, mammograms and MRIs. These big regional differences have been in the news lately: As the Washington Post wrote on Wednesday, "One hospital charges $8,000 - another $38,000." Hennepin County officials will host the open house from 5:30-7:30 p.m. at the St. Louis Park Rec Center.
Hennepin County officials are hosting a Southwest LRT station area planning open house at the St. Louis Park Rec Center from 5:30-7:30 p.m. on Thursday, April 18. The meeting is meant to engage the public in planning work around proposed light rail transit (LRT) stations for the Southwest LRT line, which is set to open in 2018. For each of the 17 stations along the route, initial concepts have been put together to show options for pedestrian, bike, bus and vehicular connections, in addition to future land use and development opportunities. The meeting is free and open to members of the public, with attendees able to see initial station alternatives and provide their reaction and comments to further guide planning efforts. Motorists driving into a tornado warning in Hennepin and Ramsey counties’ will receive roadside alerts, thanks to a new collaboration between county emergency management divisions, ClearChannel Outdoor and the National Weather Service. A new system, tested in downtown Minneapolis today, will make use of ClearChannel Outdoor commercial digital billboards to warn drivers of a tornado warning in their vicinity. The goal of the partnership is to offer early warning and new training to drivers, who may be unable to hear tornado sirens inside their cars, or who may not be listening to radio stations that would warn them of a safety threat. Jay Quam had just met up with his wife and daughter.
Hennepin County Judge Jay Quam was among those who just escaped injury from the Boston Marathon explosions. Quam told Minnesota Public Radio that he crossed the finish line at 2:05 p.m. EST and had just met up with his wife and daughter about a block or two away when he heard an explosion followed by another explosion. MPR quoted Quam, who lives in Eden Prairie, as saying: I thought that somebody must've planted some bombs at the finish line of the Boston Marathon, honestly. There really wasn't any other explanation for those distinctive sounds. Quam was first appointed a Hennepin County judge in 2006 and elected in 2008, according to the Minnesota Judicial Branch. With the explosions at the Boston Marathon, the Sheriff’s Office is asking people to be vigilant.

Today, authorities are investigating explosions at the Boston Marathon that have killed two people and have injured approximately 100 others. According to state, local and national security sources, there are no known threats in Minnesota or Hennepin County. As a reminder, the Hennepin County Sheriff’s Office urges citizens to be engaged in public safety in our community by reporting suspicious activity. If you “see something, say something.” Citizens should call 911 or contact local law enforcement. The redevelopment of a former Suzuki dealership and significant improvements to France Avenue are two of the bigger items set to go before the St. Louis Park City Council for consideration Monday night, April 15. The France Avenue pedestrian improvements have been simmering since 2006, when the ownership of France Avenue between Minnetonka Boulevard and West 22nd Street was transferred from Hennepin County to the City of St. Louis Park. Pedestrian improvements as well as traffic calming measures have been in the plans since then, with $320,000 in funding from Hennepin County ready to pick up the bulk of the bill. Five percent of Hennepin County adults have the disease—and many aren’t aware they have it. Tuesday’s ‘Diabetes Alert Day’ is a good time to consider whether you’re at risk.
Tuesday is Diabetes Alert Day, and the Minnesota Department of Health is urging all Minnesotans to look into whether they’re at risk for diabetes. More than one in 20 Hennepin County adults has diabetes, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s National Diabetes Surveillance System. The percentage of adult Minnesotans with diabetes nearly doubled between 1994 and 2010, according to the state Department of Health. The agency estimates that 80,000 Minnesota adults may have diabetes without knowing it. “Given the alarming increase of diabetes, we are encouraging Minnesotans to use this day to think about whether they or someone they love might have diabetes or prediabetes and not even know about it,” a news release quoted…
