Wednesday, Hennepin County Sheriff Rich Stanek and the Minnesota Sheriffs’ Association announced support for state legislation that would improve public safety by strengthening gun background checks and increasing punishments for repeat offenders. Sheriff Stanek and Minnesota Sheriffs’ Association Executive Director Jim Franklin joined a bipartisan group of lawmakers at the State Capitol in St. Paul to support the legislation authored by State Representative Debra Hilstrom of Brooklyn Center. Hello Everyone, Policy committees are starting to hear bills as the finance committees are going through the Governor’s budget. Judiciary is one of the few committees (there are only 3) that are both policy and finance so we will have a very full and busy agenda. On the floor we ratified the State employee contracts and had a few more Commissioner confirmations. I have introduced the Prosecutor’s Package, a bill that will curb gun violence in our communities. S.F. 235 is a bi-partisan piece of legislation that has wide ranging support from the Minnesota Sheriff’s Association, Hennepin County Attorney’s Office and MPPOA. The House …

Sami Rahamim, a St. Louis Park High student and the son of slain Accent Signage owner Reuven Rahamim, spoke to CNN on Wednesday about gun violence and meeting with President Barack Obama. Fifth District Rep. Keith Ellison invited Rahamim to attend Tuesday’s State of the Union as part of an effort to step up pressure for tighter gun control laws. Each member of Congress gets to bring just one guest to the House gallery during the speech. Reuven Rahamim, 61, died Sept. 27 when an employee who had just been fired took out a gun and shot Rahamim and other Accent employees. Andrew Engeldinger then shot himself. Today, Hennepin County Sheriff Rich Stanek joined Minneapolis residents and law enforcement leaders in a roundtable discussion with President Barack Obama to discuss guns and extreme violence. Among the reasons for President Obama’s visit was to highlight why Minneapolis and Hennepin County have sustained overall reductions in violent crime in recent years and to look for solutions to further reduce gun violence. President called on voters to pressure their legislators to pass gun control measures.
Speaking to a crowd of local dignitaries and law enforcement officers on Monday, President Barack Obama called on voters to pressure Congress to act on curbing gun violence. "We've suffered too much pain to stand by and do nothing," he said. Adopting universal background checks, banning military-style assault weapons, limiting ammunition magazines to 10 rounds, and putting more police officers on the street are "common sense" measures to reduce gun violence, the President said. Several gun control measures echoing Obama's proposals are currently before the Minnesota Legislature. Hennepin County Sheriff Rich Stanek and a handful of law enforcement leaders met with President Barack Obama at the White House Monday to discuss mental illness and gun violence. Sheriff Stanek began the meeting in by expressing concerns that he has raised in recent weeks in Minnesota. Among the comments he made in the discussion with President Obama: “Gun control alone will not solve the complex problem of guns and extreme violence,” said Sheriff Stanek. “We have an access problem.
