Sen. Latz Week in Review: Vulnerable Adult Bill Signed Into Law

A message from District 44's state senator about happenings in the Legislature.

[The following news release comes from the office of Sen. Ron Latz (DFL-District 44)]   During this week we spent Monday through Friday on the Senate floor working through bills on General Orders, a few conference committee reports and a few omnibus bills. During the week I had one bill pass the Senate floor. The bill (S.F. 1657), brought to me by City of Hopkins prosecutor Jason Hutchison, allows prosecutors to use female genital mutilation to enhance criminal penalties in a domestic assault. Sen. Latz Week in Review: Third Deadlines And Omnibus Bills

Some of the sessions were lengthy as we worked through individual bills that were on general orders as well as several Omnibus bills (Public Safety, K-12, Higher Education & Taxes). You can read more about the …

An early adjournment of the Legislature that could come as soon as next week’s Easter/Passover break would leave many bills unheard, but the uncertainties of scheduling mean it’s unclear which proposals would lose out. “I don’t think there’s any way to know because we don’t know what’s going to get done before then,” said Sen. Ron Latz (DFL-District 44), who represents Hopkins, St. Louis Park and Golden Valley. Rep. Steve Simon (DFL-District 44A) speculated that adjournment next week could prevent consideration of an omnibus liquor bill. Simon has two measures in that bill—a proposal to allow liquor stores to host periodic "tastings" with outside experts for a small fee and the “Four Firkins proposal” to let liquor stores sell store-…

I'm with Sen. Latz on this one...the longer the session drags on the more money they spend. Mothball the legislature until next February when there's real work to be done.   more ›
