Every Sunday, St. Louis Park Patch will review the week that was by highlighting five stories that had the community talking. 1) On Monday, St. Louis Park Patch freelancer James Sanna reported that the St. Louis Park School Board is still determining what to do with Freida Bailey, the Aquila Elementary principal who was put on leave following a string of complaints from parents. 2) On Tuesday, Patch reported on the big news for former Benilde-St. Margaret's basketball standout Kachine Alexander, who was drafted by the WNBA's Minnesota Lynx. 3) On Wednesday, Patch had coverage of the House committee hearing for the "Four Firkins bill," which would allow Minnesota liquor stores to sell store-branded merchandise. 4) On Friday, Patch reported …

Edina Realty to Fill Vacant Fishman's Deli Building

The new real estate office is set to open in August.

Edina Realty will be opening a new office this summer in the building that housed Fishman's Deli for a decade before the community market closed in February. An Edina Realty spokeswoman said the new office will open in August. The Star Tribune reports that two current Edina Realty locations—at 3270 W. Lake St. and 4800 Olson Memorial Highway—will be closing and consolidating into the new location. The 10,000 square-foot building will be adding on 2,400 square feet to make the transition possible. Fishman's was a popular destination among members of the local Jewish community, as the deli sold a wide array of kosher foods and baked traditional Jewish breads. However, owner Stewart Fishman said rent and high overhead simply caught up with …

Mayoral Minute: Jacobs Says He is Frustrated by SLP Freight Reroute Study

St. Louis Park Mayor Jeff Jacobs also shared his thoughts on the closing of a local landmark and the debate over collective bargaining going on in Wisconsin.

St. Louis Park Patch sat down with St. Louis Park Mayor Jeff Jacobs last week for a monthly chat. St. Louis Park Patch: No cost estimates have come out from the county’s study of a potential freight rail reroute through St. Louis Park. Is this frustrating you?  Mayor Jeff Jacobs: Yes, a lot. I want to know what all this stuff is going to cost. In fact, I’m getting a lot of push back from the community saying, “You have to make a decision.” And I say, “No, no, no, I don’t make a decision yet. I can’t.” It’s like walking up to a district court judge and saying, “Here, your honor, is half the case. Now give me a decision right this minute.” … At the end of the day, I’m frustrated by the fact that it’s taking this long … For a number of …

Snapshot: St. Louis Park

It's Official: Fishman's Doors Closed

Employees were hard at work cleaning out leftover goods and equipment from the popular deli on Thursday evening.

After serving the St. Louis Park community for 15 years, Fishman's Kosher Market & Deli officially closed its doors Sunday, and work is underway to clear the building for new development. A few pedestrians passing by Thursday evening tried the doors, as the lights inside the deli were on. However, the employees inside were just cleaning and taking care of the last of the popular market's food and equipment. Owner Stewart Fishman announced the closure last month, to the dismay of many in the St. Louis Park Jewish community and beyond.

Week in Review: Jan. 23 - Jan. 29

St. Louis Park Patch looks back at the biggest stories of the past week.

Every Sunday, St. Louis Park Patch will review the week that was by highlighting five stories that had the community talking. 1) On Tuesday, Patch reported on City Council's frustrations over Highway 100 construction plans, as there are many questions about the scaled-back project — namely, when if ever it will begin. 2) Also on Tuesday, Patch reported on shots fired near the Meadowbrook Apartments. Later in the week, two men were charged with robbery, while one of the two was charged for allegedly firing the gun. 3) To mark what would have been Kali Mann's 23rd birthday, Patch on Wednesday looked at the life and legacy of the young woman who died in a Christmas Eve car crash. 4) Also on Wednesday, Patch reported on the likely closing of …

Community Laments Likely Loss of Fishman's

The longtime kosher deli in St. Louis Park is preparing to close Feb. 21.

Speaking with the soft voice of a man worn down from pouring sweat and tears into a livelihood, Stewart Fishman said it'll be hard to see his business close, but he's at peace with it. Fishman, owner of Fishman's Kosher Market and Deli, said Wednesday the store would be closing after 15 years of business in St. Louis Park — 10 of those years at its current location. Fishman cited high overhead costs “catching up with him,” as well as trouble with rent, as the reasons to shut down when his lease ends Feb. 21. The announcement immediately spurred community action. Many devoted customers took to Facebook to lament the closure and ask what they could do to prevent it. A “Save Fishman’s Kosher” Facebook account picked up nearly 400 followers in…

Should I also find it embarrassing that an English native cannot spell "embarrasing"? No I shouldn't, spelling mistakes happen. While trying to not be antagonistic I don't think it's fair to condemn the entire community to the loss of Fishman's Kosher. While it may be easy to cite a variety of sources as the root of it's collapse the fact remains that none of us have the answer. According to the …   more ›

Fishman's Deli Preparing to Close

The well-known kosher market could shut down Feb. 21.

Fishman's Deli, the popular kosher market in St. Louis Park, is preparing to shut down, its owner said Wednesday. "This is perhaps the most difficult letter that I have written. We have been served notice that our lease will not be extended past February 21st, 2011," Stewart Fishman said in a press release. "While there is still a small chance that some market entity will relocate to a new location, it is not clear when and if." Fishman added that the store's inventory will be marked down in coming weeks in anticipation of closing. Already, the news of the deli's pending closure has struck a nerve with the community, as a number of people have posted on the store's Facebook page, lamenting the news and asking if there's anything they can …

This is a bummer... almost all the old-style delis are gone. Fishman's, albeit very expensive, is a great place.   more ›
