Editor's Note: The following is a Hennepin County Sheriff's Office release. * Don’t openly display your Christmas tree and gifts in the window so it’s easily visible. A burglar could smash the window and grab the packages. * If you are away on a trip, ask a neighbor to help create a "lived in" look for your home. Use a light timer when you are away and ask a neighbor to keep the front of your home clean of papers and debris. A neighbor could even park a car on your driveway. * Don’t hide spare keys under rocks, in flowerpots, or above door ledges. Instead give the spare key to a trusted neighbor. * Don't announce that you are out-of-town on social media sites. Post your vacation photos on facebook when you return from your out-of-town …

Burglaries and aggressive panhandling attempts often increase in the spring and summer.
With the city recently issuing a crime alert due to a string of burglaries—and an aggressive panhandler being sought in Golden Valley and St. Louis Park—local police today issued some tips to deal with warm weather crime. The St. Louis Park Police Department recommends the following to minimize the risk of your home getting burglarized: The department reports that there were 31 burglary incidents in the city during the first three months of 2011—consistent with five-year averages. However, 58 percent of the incidents occurred at an apartment complex, while 72 percent came from one of four neighborhoods—Shelard Park, Eliot, Lenox and Birchwood. I want panhandling to be made ILLEGAL in St. Louis Park. Everyday on my way home from work I see bums begging for money on the 394 exits on Xenia/Park Place or Louisiana. I am fed up! I want these people to be removed. I hate having to see some bum begging for money and it is embarrassing when friends or family come to visit and see those types of people in my neighborhood.
