Are you gearing up to let your fingers do the walking on Cyber Monday?
St. Louis Park residents who didn’t want to brave the crowds on Black Friday or Small Business Saturday still have one more big chance to save courtesy of Cyber Monday. Similar to the two other major shopping events, Cyber Monday differs in that consumers don’t have to leave the comfort of their own homes (or offices) to take advantage of some pretty big pre-holiday deals. All the bargains laid out for Cyber Monday are for online shoppers only. So how can you find the best deals online this Cyber Monday? While most major retailers that have an online presence aren’t tipping their hats on their online deals just yet, many have splash pages set up that they're inviting shoppers to bookmark in advance of the Nov. 26 shopping holiday. Here are…

Sears and Walmart plan to open at 8 p.m. Thanksgiving Day, while Target plans a 9 p.m. opening.
Retail workers and shoppers are once again pushing stores to stay closed on Thanksgiving Day instead of starting Black Friday on Thursday, as many plan to do. This year, Target will launch its Black Friday sale at 9 p.m. on Thanksgiving Day, while Sears and Walmart have announced plans to open at 8 p.m. Meanwhile, Best Buy is continuing the midnight openings it started last year. Critics say Thanksgiving Day openings prevent employees from spending the holiday with their families. Opposition is growing on online petition website Change.org. “C Renee,” a woman who says she’s been a Target employee for six years, started a petition asking the retailer to “give Thanksgiving back to families and not open on Thanksgiving evening.” “I have …

Don't expect weird hours or door-buster sales from small business owners in St. Louis Park.
With Black Friday looming, small business owners in St. Louis Park say successful holiday seasons don't mean going toe-to-toe with big-box retailers. Rather, it’s important for a small business to “just be itself” this time of year, said Ellen Hertz, owner of Max’s. “We don’t have any big screen TVs here,” she said, referring to a Black Friday standard. Instead of opening at 3 a.m. and offering door-busters, Hertz said she wants to provide a calmer, quieter alternative for shoppers. Sara Commers, owner of custom jewelry store Studio C Designs, agreed, noting she will serve pastries and coffee to customers on Friday morning—in hopes of creating a warm atmosphere—but won't do the traditional Black Friday blitz. Though they might not have …
