Benilde-St. Margaret's Casey Nightingale also picked up a second-place medal in the diving finals.
Kathryn Ostrom couldn’t help but critique herself mid-stride. The St. Louis Park junior, in the middle of the Class A state 100 breaststroke for which she is the defending champion, realized her start wasn’t up to par. “I could see everybody on each side of me ahead of me, and I was like, ‘Bad start again,’” she said. “I was like, ‘I tried to make it a good one, but it didn’t work out.'” Fortunately for Ostrom, her ability in the pool took over from there. Ostrom won the 100 breaststroke for the second straight year on Saturday at the University of Minnesota Aquatic Center, earning the Orioles girls swimming and diving team its only state title of the 2011 season. Casey Nightingale and Rachel Thorstenson hope to treat this week's Class A state meet like any other event.
Like every practice they’ve had since Aug. 15, senior Casey Nightingale and junior Rachel Thorstenson prepared on Wednesday. The Benilde-St. Margaret’s divers worked on their craft, took advice from coach Scott Smith and didn’t call it quits until their techniques were just right. Repetition and consistency. It’s what this Red Knights duo hopes will carry them through the weekend during the culmination of their 2011 season. Nightingale and Thorstenson will compete at the Class A state diving meet beginning Thursday at the University of Minnesota Aquatic Center. Both Thursday’s preliminary round and Saturday’s championships begin at noon. The key? Remembering that state is just another meet that simply has a more prominent title. “We’ve …
