The Benilde-St. Margaret's dance team took second in the state Class 2A jazz competition Friday night at the Target Center in downtown Minneapolis. The Red Knights won the title in 2011, but were edged out by Chaska this year. Totino-Grace took third. In Class 3A, Wayzata took first, followed by Maple Grove and Eastview. Two Red Knights made the all-tournament team: Taylor Kenyon and Natalie Walsh.

Defending state Class AA jazz champion performs at halftime of boys basketball game.
The multiple award-winning Benilde-St. Margaret's dance team performed at halftime of the BSM-Minnetonka boys basketball game Tuesday evening. The Knightettes won the jazz dance competition at last year's MSHSL state meet, their third jazz division title in four years. The team will compete next in the conference championships Saturday, Jan. 7, at North Branch High School.

The Orioles lost on the road to Spring Lake Park, 4-3.
Here is a recap of weekend sports action involving St. Louis Park High School and Benilde-St. Margaret's: SLP Girls Hockey Falls by One The Orioles couldn't notch their second win of the season on Saturday, instead losing for the seventh straight time, 4-3 to Spring Lake Park. Park (1-7) is lucky to have stayed close, thanks to junior goalie Hannah Brodersen, who stopped a whopping 50 of 54 shots on net. By contrast, the Orioles only fired 16 shots as a team. Goals were notched by Leah Schrank, Lauren Greenbush and Anna Basill. Up next for the Orioles is a Tuesday road game against Minnehaha Academy. Here is a recap of St. Louis Park and Benilde-St. Margaret's sports action from Thursday night: BSM Boys Hoops Wins Big in Opener The Red Knights had no problem with Rosemount in the season opener, winning 75-49 on the road. BSM (No. 1 in Class 3A) was led by 21 points from Sanjay Lumpkin and 19 points from Isaiah Zierden. Will Dunn and Isaiah Gray also scored in double figures for the Red Knights, who built a 13-point lead by halftime and doubled it in the second half. With section playoffs nearing — or in some cases, already underway — here are some Orioles and Red Knights that are helping to lead title pushes, as well as a dance team that just brought home its own trophy: Benilde-St. Margaret’s dance team No, this isn’t an athlete of the week, but collectively, these girls are all very deserving. Every Sunday, St. Louis Park Patch will review the week that was by highlighting five stories that had the community talking. 1) On Monday, Patch reported on the closure of St. Louis Park junior and senior high schools because of asbestos concerns. The buildings were closed through Tuesday. After a one-year absence from the winners' circle, the Benilde-St. Margaret's girls are once again Class AA jazz dance state champions.
If this was the NFL or NBA, one could say Benilde-St. Margaret’s got one for the thumb. Four-time Minnesota state dance team champions in the jazz division, the Benilde-St. Margaret’s girls did it again Friday. The Knightettes, champions as recently as 2008 and 2009, danced their way back to the top at the Target Center in Minneapolis. “I am extremely happy,” co-coach Kelly McGinnis said. “We are so proud of these girls. The Red Knights will compete for the state title next weekend at the Target Center.
The Benilde-St. Margaret's dance line team qualified for the state tournament on Saturday afternoon in both the high kick and jazz competitions. The Section 1AA tournament was held in Albert Lea, where the Red Knights took first-place in the jazz section and third-place in the high kick. Co-coach Kelly McGinnis said, "The girls brought energy to their performances today. We're hoping to peak at state. We've got to give our perfect performance and that's what we are hoping to give next weekend." The state tournament is Feb. 18 and 19 at the Target Center in Minneapolis.
