Benilde-St. Margaret's seniors Sanjay Lumpkin and Isaiah Zierden were among the five finalists, but Siyani Chambers of Hopkins took home the prize.
Hopkins guard Siyani Chambers is this year’s Mr. Basketball, 1500 ESPN Twin Cities announced Wednesday afternoon. Chmabers beat out four other finalists, including Benilde-St. Margaret's seniors Sanjay Lumpkin and Isaiah Zierden. Lumpkin averaged 19.5 points per game this season, while Zierden averaged 19.7. They have signed to play at Northwestern and Creighton next year, respectively. The pair led BSM to a 25-2 record and a top seed in the section playoffs, but the Red Knights were upset by Minneapolis Washburn in the section final. Though Lumpkin and Zierden had outstanding years, Chambers is certainly a worthy pick. He has three state tournaments under his belt and has been a powerhouse on the court over the years. In the Royals’ upset…

The Red Knights lost to Washburn on Thursday, 71-66.
Benilde-St. Margaret's won't have the chance to capture a second state championship during this winter sports season. For the second straight year, the BSM boys basketball team was upset in the section finals. On Thursday, it was No. 2 seed Minneapolis Washburn knocking off the top-seeded Red Knights, 71-66 at Chanhassen High School. Isaiah Zierden led BSM with 19 points. Sanjay Lumpkin and Isaiah Gray added 18 and 15, respectively. Last year, BSM fell in the section finals to Waconia. That was also a match-up of a top-seeded BSM squad versus a second-seeded opponent. The Red Knights, who spent a good part of the year ranked No. 1 in Class 3A, finish the season 25-2. The boys state basketball tournament will begin on Wednesday.
