Ellison Praises Obama’s Housing Finance Nominee

Obama plans to nominate Rep. Mel Watt to lead the Federal Housing Finance Agency.

Fifth District Rep. Keith Ellison is praised the president’s selection of Rep. Mel Watt (D-NC) to lead the Federal Housing Finance Agency—which supervises Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac and the Federal Home Loan Banks. Ellison, a Democratic member of the House Financial Services Committee, released the following statement Wednesday after a White House official announced that President Barack Obama planned to nominate Watt:  Mel Watt is a strong housing and community development advocate. If confirmed by the Senate, working families in Minnesota will have an ally leading the Federal Housing Finance Agency. Since the Great Recession, there have been more than 4 million foreclosures and American homeowners lost more than half the value on their …

President Barack Obama will visit Minneapolis on Monday to meet with law enforcement and community members to discuss gun control measures nationwide

Sami Rahamim to Attend State of the Union With Keith Ellison

The son of slain Accent Signage owner and St. Louis Park resident Reuven Rahamim is supporting a push for tighter gun control measures.

Rep. Keith Ellison has invited Sami Rahamim, a St. Louis Park High student and the son of slain Accent Signage owner Reuven Rahamim, to join him for the president’s State of the Union address Feb. 12, Ellison announced at a gun violence forum Thursday in Minneapolis. The 5th District representative and four other Democratic U.S. representatives had earlier urged their colleagues to use the speech to step up pressure for tighter gun control laws by inviting someone hurt by gun violence to the address. Each member of Congress gets to bring just one guest to the House gallery during the speech. Reuven Rahamim, 61, died Sept. 27 when an employee who had just been fired took out a gun and shot Rahamim and other Accent employees. Andrew …

MPR Backs Up Ellison’s Social Security Claims

The 5th District Congressman also pushed back against Republican fiscal cliff proposals.

Minnesota Public Radio’s PoliGraph blog mostly backed up Rep. Keith Ellison’s claims that Social Security is solvent for the next couple decades. The Democratic 5th District congressman claimed Social Security wouldn’t be exhausted until 2037—arguing that it is not part of the federal deficit and should be left out of fiscal cliff negotiations. PoliGraph’s experts noted that Ellison is using an old number; the newest projections have the Social Security Trust Fund running out in 2033. It also noted that while Social Security is not part of the federal government’s general fund, some experts argue that interest owed to the program does affect the deficit. Still, MPR concluded that, “His claim leans toward accurate.”   Fiscal cliff …

Barack Obama Re-Elected President

President Obama defeated Republican Mitt Romney in the 2012 presidential election.

President Barack Obama and Vice President Joe Biden were re-elected Tuesday night, defeating Republican challenger Mitt Romney and his vice-presidential running mate Rep. Paul Ryan. NBC News called the presidential election for Obama around 10:15 CST. The president sent a message on Twitter at 10:14 saying simply, "This happened because of you. Thank you." The Obama campaign won the most expensive presidential race ever, with both parties raising about $2.6 billion. The race was filled with negative campaigning on both sides, from President Obama attacking Romney’s business experience with Bain Capital to Romney lambasting Obama’s handling of the economy. The race tightened during the final months of the campaign, with gaffes and surges …

Obama Wins Minnesota

Voters in Minnesota on Tuesday cast their ballot for Barack Obama, giving him the state's 10 Electoral votes.

Barack Obama won Minnesota’s 10 electoral votes on Tuesday, defeating Republican Mitt Romney. CBS News has called the Minnesota race for the President shortly after 9:30 p.m., about the same time ABC News projected Minnesota for Obama, after Obama took a more than 40,000 vote lead with about 10 percent of precincts reporting. The Associated Press also called the Minnesota race for Obama before 10 p.m., according to the Pioneer Press. Obama's 12 percent lead would match his margin over John McCain in 2008. In the 2008 presidential election, the state voted for the Democratic candidate, and since the 1990s has voted for the overall winner of the presidential race 3 out of 5 times. It has voted Republican only once in the last 50 years. …
