Safety in the Park Plans Presence at Upcoming Light-Rail Meetings

The Metropolitan Council's decision on the Southwest light-rail project's scope is expected in mid-October.

A decision from the Metropolitan Council about the route of the Southwest light-rail line continues to be postponed, but neighborhood group Safety in the Park is mobilizing now to make sure regional officials are aware of its opposition to re-routing freight rail through St. Louis Park.

When the Corridor Management Committee, an influential panel of mayors and county executives, meets on Wednesday to discuss the project staff's recommendation of a shallow tunnel, Safety in the Park members will be present, placards in hand.

"Bring a small (8.5x11) sign or wear your orange button so the decision makers know what you think," read an email sent out by the group.

Safety in the Park members are also being encouraged to attend a Thursday open house at the Kenwood Community Center in Minneapolis.

SWLRT Corridor Management Committee  9 a.m., Oct. 9, St. Louis Park Recreation Center, 3700 Monterey Dr.

SWLRT (Green Line Extension) Open House:  5:30-7:30 p.m., Oct. 10, Kenwood Community Center, 2101 W. Franklin Ave., Minneapolis
