After 500 waffles, 100 volunteers raised more than $1,700 for the St. Louis Park Senior Program.

If bellies were bulging, you can blame Dad’s Belgian Waffles, served up like they were going out of style to 395 people who attended the sixth-annual Waffle Dinner fundraiser at the on Friday.

“I put a different one in each quarter—boysenberry, blueberry, maple and blackberry,” said Karen Kiecker of St. Louis Park, who invited two friends, neither of whom suffered any guilt in going back for seconds.

The popular affair, served by 15 industrial-quality waffle irons and accompanied this year by Mary Jo Mileski’s accordion, included spontaneous dancing and brought in more children this year than usual, according to organizing committee chairwoman Betty Pickle.

The more than $1,700 raised will fund equipment, and stipends for teachers and speakers for the St. Louis Park Senior Program, Pickle said.

One hundred volunteers kept the toy shop and bake sale running smoothly, and the sausages and whipped cream coming.

“I’ve helped organize events on both state and national levels, and I’ve never seen such wonderful volunteers,” Pickle said. “There were so many, we had to turn some away.”

Organizing committee member Harris Hubers received the prize for most invites, bringing together 18 family members from Bloomington, Shakopee and Chanhassen. His prize? As many gigantic waffles as he could eat.

“Four is the record,” noted senior program coordinator Rita Kach.
