Sports Roundup: Nice Night For Benilde Hockey

Benilde-St. Margaret's tops Chisago Lakes, 10-2, in North Suburban matchup; Red Knights boys rallies past Maple Grove.

It was a good night to be a Red Knight on Tuesday as the Benilde-St. Margaret's boys and girls hockey teams each claimed victories on the ice. The news was not as good for St. Louis Park girls teams as both the Orioles basketball and hockey teams both lost at home.

Benilde-St. Margaret's Girls Hockey: Red Knights 10, Chisago Lakes 2

The Benilde-St. Margaret's girls hockey team thumped Chisago Lakes, 10-2, to improve to 9-2-1 on the season.

Twelve Red Knights players recorded points in the victory, led by two-goal, one-assist games from forwards Aly Hoffman and Brittany Wheeler. Forward Anne Arnason also scored twice, while forward Caitlin Reilly logged one goal and three assists.

Defender Jordyn Anne Burns, forward Bailey Forcier and forward Kelly Pannek also scored for the Red Knights, while goaltender Tiana Press made 21 saves for the win.

Next up for Benilde is an opening-round game in the Schwan Cup versus Sun Prairie, Wis. at 7:30 p.m. next Monday at the Schwan Super Rink in Blaine.

Benilde-St. Margaret's Boys Hockey: Red Knights 4, Maple Grove 3

Forward Grant Besse scored two third-period goals as the Benilde-St. Margaret's boys hockey team improved to 6-0 on the season with a 4-3 win at Maple Grove.

The Crimson rallied from a 2-0 deficit in the first period to lead 3-2 early in the final frame before Besse made a winner of the Red Knights with goals at 2:38 and 5:52 of the third period.

Benilde scored the first two goals of the game as forwards Pat Steinhauser and Jake O'Borsky scored at :40 and 5:01 of the opening interval before Maple Grove recorded the next three scores — one in each period — to take the lead before the Red Knights' final surge.

Goaltender Justin Quale made 23 saves in the Benilde net for his second win of the season.

The Red Knights are off until after Christmas, when the team hosts Eden Prairie at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 28 in the St. Louis Park Rec Center.

St. Louis Park Girls Hockey: St. Francis-North Branch 2, Orioles 1

A 2-1 loss to St. Francis/North Branch dropped the St. Louis Park girls hockey team to 2-7-1 on the season.

Forward Sarah Beckstrom, assisted by linemate Danielle Rice, scored the Orioles lone goal of the game at 11:39 of the second period to briefly tie the game before the visitors took the lead for good three minutes later en route to the final victory.

St. Louis Park goaltender Hannah Brodersen made 46 saves in the defeat.

Next up for the Orioles is a trip to the Plymouth Ice Arena for a 7:15 p.m. matchup with Robbinsdale Armstrong on Tuesday, Dec. 28.

St. Louis Park Girls Basketball: Hopkins 84, Orioles 23

The St. Louis Park girls basketball team fell to 0-5 on the season following an 84-23 loss to Hopkins — the top-ranked team in Class AAAA — at home.

Individual results were not currently available.

The Orioles return to the hardcourt at 5 p.m. Tuesday Dec. 28 against Zimmerman in the Simley Tournament.
