Sports Roundup: Orioles Boys Hoops Improves to .500

The St. Louis Park boys basketball is 2-2 on the season after rolling over visiting East Ridge, 73-52; Benilde-St. Margaret's won Tuesday night basketball and hockey contests.

Tuesday night proved to be successful for the St. Louis Park boys basketball team, as well as the Benilde-St. Margaret's girls hoops and boys hockey teams as all three claimed victories.

St. Louis Park Boys Basketball: Orioles 73, East Ridge 52

A 45-27 second half blew open a close contest as the St. Louis Park boys basketball team routed East Ridge, 73-52, to improve to 2-2 on the season.

Orioles guard Marquealis Edwards scored a game-high 17 points as his team quickly expanded on a 28-25 halftime advantage against its visitors from Woodbury to win by 21 points and break even on the season with a second-straight victory.

Center D.J. Pollard chipped in 14 points, while guard Aaron Ziman and forward Garrison Gillard each logged 10 points apiece.

The Orioles are scheduled to head out on the road Friday to play at Chaska at 7:15 p.m. From there, St. Louis Park closes out its pre-Christmas schedule with a matchup at Hopkins on Tuesday, Dec. 21.

Benilde-St. Margaret's Girls Basketball: Red Knights 67, Chisago Lakes 48

The Benilde-St. Margaret's girls basketball team cruised to victory in its North Suburban Conference opener with a 67-48 victory at Chisago Lakes.

It was the second-straight win for the Red Knights and it propelled the team back above the .500 mark at 3-2 on the season. Benilde led large nearly from the start, going up 28-16 at halftime before eventually winning by 19 points.

Guard Josie Dillon led all scorers with 18 points in the game, while forward Olivia Antilla recorded 13 points and center Khadijah Shumpert logged 12 points.

Next up for the Red Knights is a North Suburban matchup versus Totino-Grace, slated for 7:15 p.m. Friday at BSM. Benilde closes out the pre-holiday slate with a non-conference contest at Minnetonka on Tuesday, Dec. 21 at 6 p.m.

Benilde-St. Margaret's Boys Hockey: Red Knights 5, Duluth Marshall 3

In a make-up of Saturday's snowstorm-postponed matchup versus Duluth Marshall, Benilde-St. Margaret's earned a 5-3 win against the Hilltoppers at Mars Lakeview Arena in Duluth. The game was originally scheduled to be played in St. Louis Park.

Pat Steinhauser recorded three points for the Red Knights, with two goals and an assist as the visitors never trailed on the night. Forwards Nick Lauth, Grant Besse and defenseman Jake Horton also scored in the two-goal victory, with Benilde goaltender Justin Quale making 32 saves for the win.

Next up, the Red Knights host Minnetonka at the St. Louis Park Rec Center at 7 p.m. Saturday night.

St. Louis Park Girls Hockey: Minnehaha Saints 3, Orioles 2

Forward Elizabeth Kremer gave the St. Louis Park girls hockey team a 1-0 lead just over two minutes into its home game against the Minnehaha Saints, yet the Orioles could not hang on to the early edge in a 3-2 loss.

Minnehaha fired back with two goals in the opening frame and after St. Louis Park forward/defender Lauren Bruun-Bryant tied the game with a goal at 5:38 of the third period, the Saints logged the game-winner at 8:43 of the final frame to clinch the one-goal win.

Orioles goaltender Hannah Brodersen made 37 saves in the game, yet her team fell to 1-7-1 on the season.

St. Louis Park now prepares to travel to the New Hope Ice Arena to play Cooper/Heritage/Providence at 7 p.m. Thursday night.

St. Louis Park Girls Basketball: Fridley 51, Orioles 36

The St. Louis Park girls basketball team fell to 0-3 on the season with a 51-36 loss at Fridley in the North Suburban Conference opener.

The Orioles trailed 18-15 at the half, buy could not keep up with the Tigers after the break.

Guard Mara Olson led the Orioles with 12 points, while forwards Cianna Edwards and Paris Delaney each recorded eight points on the night.

The Orioles host Chisago Lakes in a North Suburban showdown at 7:15 p.m. Friday night.

Results were not currently available for the North Suburban conference Nordic ski meet featuring both St. Louis Park and Benilde-St. Margaret's.
