It wasn’t that long ago that hockey and basketball teams across Minnesota were battling for state championships, but it is indeed time for baseball, softball, track and a number of other sports to begin.

There are a few interesting storylines to watch locally. At , isn’t the only new coach ready to make his mark. Aaron McEachran, who was drafted by the Toronto Blue Jays in 2001 and played several seasons of minor league ball, is the new Orioles baseball coach. Look for “Senior Spotlight” articles throughout the spring. And speaking of outstanding seniors, congratulations to Mara Olson, who has been named St. Louis Park High School’s 2011 Athena Award winner. The award honors outstanding senior female athletes at area high schools.

Lastly, the arrival of spring also brings with it the arrival of a myriad of recreation sports. In St. Louis Park, adult indoor volleyball is underway, while adult softball will be soon. Of course, a number of youth activities will also soon be starting, including Little League baseball (registration ends April 5).

As these games get rolling, we want to hear from you and share your stories. Know a young star athlete? Hit the winning homer in last night’s softball game? On a really interesting team? Send written submissions, as well as photos if you have them, to local editor Michael Rose at michael.rose@patch.com. We’ll feature your stories throughout the spring in this column.
