Sports Roundup: Red Knights Sweep, Orioles Split Sectional Soccer Openers

Benilde-St. Margaret's doesn't give up a goal in its two games; St. Louis Park girls win in overtime while boys blanked by Roseville.

Three of four local soccer squads concluded the opening round of their sectional playoffs happy and advancing to the next round. However, one team fell victim to upset and was eliminated from the postseason.

Park Girls Soccer Advances

Lauren Miller and Hannah Geressu, the girls soccer team's top two scorers in the regular season, each netted a goal in the fourth-seeded Orioles' 2-1 overtime defeat of No. 5 Minneapolis South in the opening round of the Section 6AA Tournament on Thursday.

Park goalkeeper Riley Riordan made nine saves in the victory as the Orioles advanced to a sectional semifinal match-up at top-seeded Wayzata, scheduled for 1 p.m. Saturday afternoon.

Park Boys Soccer Upset

The news was not nearly as good for the Park boys soccer team, as the fourth-seeded Orioles saw their season come to a close in a 2-0 loss to No. 5 seed Roseville in Thursday's nightcap.

Individual statistics were not made available. Park wrapped the 2011 season with a 12-4 record.

Red Knights Girls Soccer Rolls

Abby Sauer scored twice to lead the No. 1 seed girls soccer team to a 7-0 defeat of No. 9 Delano in its first game of the Section 6A Tournament following an opening-round bye on Tuesday.

Peggy Renier, Alyssa Hoffman, Kelly Pannek, Hannah Cope and Maria Michels all scored for the Red Knights, with the team employing three goalies—Angela Charley, Annie Michels and starter Mikayla Coulombe—in the shutout.

BSM will host either No. 4 Providence Academy or No. 5 Rockford on Saturday.

Red Knights Boys Soccer Dominates

The No. 1 seed BSM boys soccer team proved to be a rude host for eighth-seeded Watertown-Mayer in its Section 6A opener on Tuesday, putting 35 shots on goal in a 13-0 victory.

Individual statistics were not made available. The Red Knights host No. 4 seed Orono on Saturday in the sectional semifinals.

Red Knights Girls Tennis Eliminated by Edina

Fourteen-time defending state champion and top sectional seed Edina ended the BSM girls tennis team's season in the Section 6AA Tournament semifinals on Thursday, defeating the Red Knights 7-0 en route to the section title.

Selected BSM players will now compete in the sectional individual tournament that commences on Oct. 17. The tandems of Paige McLeod/Taylor McLeod and Kelly Dwyer/Julia Weber will take part in the doubles bracket, while Morgan Grahek and Katie Witkowski play in the singles playoffs.

Orioles Girls Tennis Singles, Doubles Ready for Playoffs

Members of the Park girls tennis team are preparing for their appearance in the Section 6AA individual tournament that begins on Oct. 17.

Competing in singles play are Natalie Lorentz and Jackie Tan-Wohlers, with the duos of Hallie Mogelson/Rebecca Robbins and Nina Schroeder/Hannah Sieff playing in the doubles bracket.

Red Knights Girls Swimming Wins

The BSM girls swimming and diving team topped Irondale, 65-37, in a North Suburban Conference dual meet on Thursday. Individual statistics were not made available.

Scores and results for contests involving the Park volleyball and swim/dive teams were not reported.
