Sports Roundup: Red Knights Girls Hockey Clinches Share Of Conference Title

A 6-0 defeat of Spring Lake Park means Benilde-St. Margaret's girls hockey can do no worse than tie for North Suburban championship.

The Benilde-St. Margaret's girls hockey team earned at least a share of the 2010-11 North Suburban Conference title to highlight a Thursday night that also saw the Red Knights boys hockey squad win, while St. Louis Park girls and boys both come up short on the rink.

Benilde St. Margaret's Girls Hockey: Red Knights 6, Spring Lake Park 0

A 6-0 victory over Spring Lake Park at Fogerty Ice Arena in Blaine improved the Benilde-St. Margaret's girls hockey team to 20-2 overall and netted the squad no worse than a split of the conference crown.

The Red Knights, 10-0 in the North Suburban, scored two goals in each period en route to the victory; Kelly Pannek netted two scores, with Sara Taffe, Anne Arnason, Jordyn Burns and Brittany Wheeler all tallying one goal. Tiana Press made just seven saves for the shutout.

Benilde hosts NSC No. 2 Irondale at 2:30 p.m. Saturday at the St. Louis Park Rec Center; a win over the Knights (16-7 overall, 12-1 NSC) would give the Red Knights the conference championship outright.

Benilde-St. Margaret's Boys Hockey: Red Knights 6, Moorhead 1

The Benilde-St. Margaret's boys hockey team proved to be rude guests in a trip to Moorhead, defeating the host Spuds by a 6-1 score in a non-conference contest.

Jake Horton scored twice, with Grant Besse, Jake O'Borsky, Christian Horn and T.J. Moore all tallying one goal apiece as the Red Knights improved to 17-2 overall. Justin Quale made 23 saves for the win.

Benilde remains out-of-conference on Saturday as Rochester Century visits the Rec Center for a 7 p.m. start on Saturday.

St. Louis Park Girls Hockey: Irondale 5, Orioles 0

The St. Louis Park girls hockey team sunk to 3-20-1 overall and 1-11 in North Suburban play with a 5-0 home loss to Irondale.

Hannah Brodersen made 29 saves on the night for the Orioles, yet the Knights scored all five of their goals in the second period.

St. Louis Park travels to Fogerty to play Spring Lake Park at 1 p.m. Saturday.

St. Louis Park Boys Hockey: Totino-Grace 8, Orioles 0

An 8-0 home loss to Totino-Grace dropped the St. Louis Park boys hockey team to 1-17 overall and 1-8 in the North Suburban.

Ryan Nichols and Ryan Froom shared time in goal for the Orioles, making 32 and 12 saves, respectively.

St. Louis Park hosts Richfield in a non-conference match-up at 1:30 p.m. Saturday.
