Sports Roundup: Red Knights Advance, Orioles Eliminated in Soccer Sectionals

Benilde-St. Margaret's sweeps Saturday semifinal matchups, St. Louis Park girls shut out by Wayzata.

Saturday was either a happy or sad day, depending on which side of town you were on, as the boys and girls soccer teams advanced to their sectional finals, while the girls soccer squad saw its season come to a close in a semifinal loss.

Orioles Girls Soccer Loses to Wayzata

After escaping with a 2-1 overtime win over fifth-seeded Minneapolis South last Thursday, the fourth-seeded Park girls soccer team was eliminated from the postseason in a 6-0 loss at No. 1 seed Wayzata.

The loss concluded the Orioles' season with a 10-3-3 record. Lauren Miller finished as the squad's top scorer with 19 goals and 10 assists for 29 points this autumn; Hannah Geressu logged 13 goals in her final campaign with the team.

Red Knights Boys Soccer Advances

A 2-0 defeat of fourth-seeded Orono advanced No. 1 seed BSM to the championship round of the Section 6A boys soccer playoff bracket.

Individual statistics were not made available. The Red Knights host No. 3 seed Waconia — a shootout victor at second-seeded Holy Family Academy on Saturday — in the title game at 5 p.m. Tuesday evening, with the winner moving on to the Class A state tournament.

Red Knights Girls Soccer Keeps Rolling

The No. 1-ranked and top-seeded BSM girls soccer team moved into the championship game of the Section 6A Tournament by means of a 4-1 semifinal win over No. 4 seed Providence Academy.

Peggy Renier, Haley Jerabek, Alyssa Hoffman and Allie Coughlin all scored for the Red Knights, with goalkeeper Mikayla Coulombe making seven saves for the win.

A trip to state is on the line as BSM hosts No. 3 seed Holy Family Catholic at 7 p.m. Tuesday night in the sectional championship contest. Holy Family upset No. 2 seed Orono 3-1 in its Saturday semifinal.

Orioles Volleyball Competes in Tourney

The Park volleyball team went 1-3 at the Faribault Tournament on Saturday and takes a 3-19 record into a regular-season ending match at Robbinsdale Cooper on Tuesday night. Individual statistics were not made available.

Red Knights Volleyball Goes 1-3

The BSM volleyball team went 1-3 in its invitational tournament on Saturday, bringing its record to 8-18 as the squad concludes its regular season at St. Francis on Monday night. Invididual statistics were not made available.
