Sports Roundup: Orioles Win in Podein's Debut

St. Louis Park beat Waconia on Saturday, 5-1.

It was a busy sports weekend for both and . Here is a quick recap:

Podein, St. Louis Park Boys Hockey Wins Debut

There has been plenty of hype surrounding the arrival of —a 10-year NHL veteran and 2001 Stanley Cup champion—at St. Louis Park High School, but that hype translated into a win for the new head coach on Saturday night.

The Orioles (1-0) only won twice last year, but jumped on host Waconia in the first period Saturday with two quick goals en route to a 5-1 win.

Freshman Josh Passolt paced St. Louis Park with two goals. Nick Gaitan-Gaitan, Tyler Brodersen and Noah Fortmeyer added a goal apiece. Senior Ryan Nichols stopped 26 of 27 Waconia shots on net.

Up next for the Orioles is a Thursday road game against Chaska. The Orioles won't play at home until Dec. 17.

BSM Girls Hockey Splits a Weekend Pair

The Red Knights lost to prep powerhouse Shattuck-St. Mary's on Friday, 3-0, before rebounding for a 6-4 win over Cloquet on Saturday.

BSM was led by a Kelly Pannek hat trick on Saturday. Sophomore Caitlin Reilly added two goals and sophomore Kaylee Druk scored once.

The Red Knights (3-2) take on Buffalo on Tuesday.

SLP Girls Hoops Loses Opener

The Orioles fell to Mound-Westonka on Friday, 84-44.

Abigail Olson led the Orioles with 11 points.

Up next for St. Louis Park (0-1) is a Tuesday road game against Chaska.

BSM Girls Hoops Falls by One

After leading by three at halftime, the Red Knights couldn't hang on against Eden Prairie in the Breakdown Sports Tip-Off Classic in Hopkins on Saturday, falling 51-50. Carly Tibbetts iced the game for Eden Prairie with a free throw with 4.7 seconds remaining in overtime.

Josie Dillon led the Red Knights with 18 points and Khadijah Shumpert added 14.

BSM (1-1) will take on St. Paul Highland Park at home on Tuesday.

SLP Boys Hoops Takes Opener

Behind a 37-21 second half, the Orioles overcame a halftime deficit and won on the road Saturday, 64-55.

Park's Kashif Hayes led all scorers with 28 points. DJ Pollard added 15, while Makhi Moore chipped in 11.

The Orioles (1-0) will take on Chaska at home on Tuesday in their next game.

BSM Boys Wrestling Finishes 8th at Meet

The Red Knights came in 8th place as a team at the Ken Droegemueller Memorial Invite on Saturday.

Seventh-grader Jake Allar came in first at 106 pounds, while junior Jarred Oftedahl came in first at 113 pounds.

The Red Knights' next meet is a Tuesday quad at Minnetonka High School.
