Sports Round-Up: Fall Season Begins for Local Teams

St. Louis Park and Benilde-St. Margaret's boys and girls squads competed last week.

The 2011 sports season began last week with a selection of squads from both and in action. 

Benilde-St. Margaret's Boys Soccer Off to Good Start

The BSM boys soccer team kicked off its season in fine form with back-to-back wins at home.

After defeating Duluth Marshall, 8-1, on Friday, the Red Knights by a 5-0 score on Saturday to enter this week undefeated.

Through two games, Brendan Schember leads the club with six points on two goals and four assists, while fellow senior co-captain John Mulvahill has four points on three goals and one assist. Goalkeeper Kevin LeBahn stopped 12 of the 13 shots he faced against Marshall and Breck.

BSM plays at Eden Prairie on Tuesday at 5 p.m.

Benilde-St. Margaret's Girls Soccer Shines in Tournament

Also unbeaten heading into this week is the BSM girls soccer team, going 1-0-1 in its first two matchups at the Showcase Tournament.

The Red Knights tied Holy Angels, 0-0, on Thursday—though the Stars won a penalty shootout that does not count in the overall standings—and blanked Breck, 8-0, on Saturday.

Peggy Renier leads BSM with seven points on four assists and three goals, while Dana Buckthorn and Aly Hoffman each have three points on two goals and one assist apiece. Neither goalkeeper, Annie Michels or Mikayla Coulombe, has been charged with a goal against so far.

The Red Knights host Blake at 8 p.m. Tuesday night.

St. Louis Park Boys Soccer Takes Opener

The Park boys soccer team opened its year triumphantly by means of a 1-0 win at Maple Grove on Saturday. Individual statistics were not available.

The Orioles are scheduled to compete in the Orono Tournament beginning on Tuesday.

St. Louis Park Girls Soccer Blanks Wisconsin Opponent

Making it a clean Saturday sweep for Park soccer was the Orioles girls team, which shut out visiting La Crescent (Wis.) by a 2-0 score.

Jenna Sheldon and Hannah Geressu scored the Orioles goals, with assists coming from Lauren Miller and Rachel Geressu.

The Park girls are also slated to take part in the Orono Tournament that begins on Tuesday.

Benilde-St. Margaret's Girls Tennis Has Solid Week

As the first Red Knights squad to see action this fall, the BSM girls tennis team took to the court at Champlin Park for the Akai Invitational on Saturday, Aug. 20.

The Red Knights went 3-0 in tournament play, topping Champlin Park (6-1), Robbinsdale Armstrong (5-2) and Minneapolis North (7-0).

However, the BSM netters suffered their first loss this past Thrusday in a 7-0 setback against visiting state power Wayzata.

St. Louis Park Volleyball Loses Road Opener

The St. Louis Park volleyball team was shutout in three-straight games to lose its opener at Hastings: 25-10, 25-22, 25-18.

Individual statistics were not available. The Orioles will host St. Paul Highland Park at 7 p.m. Wednesday night.

Results were not available for: Park girls tennis, Park and BSM cross-country.
