St. Louis Park Holiday Sports Preview

A number of local teams will be competing in holiday tournaments this week.

The week between Christmas and New Year's is always a busy week in Minnesota high school sports, as a number of holiday tournaments pop up. Teams from and will be participating in a few of them—here's a preview:

SLP Boys Hockey

  • What: Duluth Heritage Holiday Hockey Tournament
  • When: Dec. 27-29
  • Where: Heritage Sports Center (120 South 30th Ave. W., Duluth)
  • Details: The Orioles come in red-hot at 6-0, but they'll be tested in the opening game of this tournament as they take on Duluth Denfeld, the state's No. 12 team in Class A. Other participants include Fort Frances (Ontario), Cloquet, Rosemount, Andover, New Prague and Buffalo. A complete game schedule is available here. Cloquet won the tournament last year.

BSM Boys Hockey

  • What: St. Louis Park Holiday Classic
  • When: Dec. 28-30
  • Where:
  • Details: The Red Knights will play host to some of the better teams in the state. Maple Grove (No. 3 in Class AA), Eden Prairie (No. 6), Moorhead (No. 11) Elk River (No. 12), Wayzata (No. 14) and Centennial (No. 19) will join Bloomington Jefferson on the ice. And the home team isn't too shabby, either—BSM is currently No. 8 in Class AA. SLP Girls Hockey

  • What: Schwan's Cup (Red Division)
  • When: Dec. 28-30
  • Where: Schwan's Super Rink (1700 105th Ave. NE, Blaine)
  • Details: The Orioles are set to compete in one of the largest hockey tournaments of the year. They'll get Bismark (ND), St. Croix Valley, Henry Sibley, Fort Frances (Ontario), Chippewa Falls Menomonie (WI), Bloomington Kennedy and Sun Prairie (WI) in their draw. BSM Girls Hockey

  • What: Schwan's Cup (Blue Division)
  • When: Dec. 28-30
  • Where: Schwan's Super Rink (1700 105th Ave. NE, Blaine)
  • Details: After winning the , the Red Knights (No. 2 in Class AA) are back to defend their title. Standing in the way will be Rochester Mayo, Hutchinson, Silver Bay, Dodge County, Eveleth-Gilbert, St. Paul United and Breck. Click here for a full schedule. 

SLP Boys Basketball

  • What: Edina Holiday Tournament
  • When: Dec. 28-29
  • Where: Edina Community Center (5701 Normandale Rd., Edina)
  • Details: The Orioles have been hard-luck losers so far this year, losing three games by a total of seven points, but they'll try to reverse their fortunes in this two-day tourney. Park opens with Northfield on Dec. 28 at 6 p.m. With a win, the Orioles will play in the championship against the Edina/Robbinsdale Armstrong winner on Dec. 29 at 7:30 p.m. An opening loss puts Park in the consolation final at 6 p.m. on Dec. 29.

BSM Boys Basketball

  • What: Eden Prairie Holiday Tournament
  • When: Dec 27 and 29
  • Where: Eden Prairie High School (17185 Valley View Rd., Eden Prairie)
  • Details: The Red Knights have been on a roll lately, with wins over and , and will look to continue the hot streak. BSM opens with Waconia on the 27th at 6 p.m. With a win, the Red Knights will play in the championship against the Eden Prairie/Holy Family winner on Dec. 29 at 7:30 p.m. An opening loss puts BSM in the consolation final at 6 p.m. on Dec. 29.

SLP Girls Basketball

  • What: Simley Holiday Tournament
  • When: Dec. 27-29
  • Where: Simley High School (2920 80th St. E, Inver Grove Heights)
  • Details: The Orioles will travel to Simley for a three-day tourney. A list of teams and a schedule were not immediately available. 

BSM Wrestling

  • What: Rumble on the Red
  • When: Dec. 29-30
  • Where: Fargodome (1800 North University Drive, Fargo, ND)
  • Details: The Red Knights will be taking part in one of the largest high school wrestling tournaments in the country when they head to Fargo for the sixth annual "Rumble on the Red." In all, 58 teams from six states will compete. You can see a full schedule here.
