BSM Alum Drafted by WNBA's Minnesota Lynx

Kachine Alexander (class of 2007) was picked in the third round Monday.

Kachine Alexander, a standout who went on to star at the University of Iowa, was drafted in the third round of Monday's WNBA Draft by her hometown team—the Minnesota Lynx.

"I can't put into words how thrilled I am to be selected in the WNBA Draft," Alexander said in a University of Iowa press release. "I have wanted a chance to play in the WNBA since I started playing basketball as a kid.

"I can't wait to get back home to Minneapolis and begin the challenge of making a WNBA roster."

Alexander, who was the first player in Iowa history to record 1,000 career points, 800 career rebounds and 300 career assists, was the 26th overall pick in the draft.

"It's very exciting news," said BSM athletic director Jerry Pettinger.

Pettinger said Alexander routinely stopped back in the Twin Cities while she was at Iowa, including for games against the University of Minnesota. Pettinger said it's neat that she'll now be here full-time.

"I think our girls program will go take in a game or two and root her on," he added.

Many members of the current team probably look up to Alexander—she led the Red Knights to the 2006 state title and was named state tournament MVP.

"She is a great competitor, a great athlete," Pettinger said.
