Should Peter Hobart be Renamed to Honor the Lilydale Students?

St. Louis Park School Board Director Joe Tatalovich suggested a change of name at a board meeting this month.

St. Louis Park School Board Director Joe Tatalovich asked the district to consider renaming Peter Hobart Elementary school to honor the students killed in last month’s Lilydale Park tragedy, the Sun Sailor reported.

Zack Mohamed Fofana, 10, and Haysem Sani, 9, died when the ground underneath them gave away and came sliding down. Two other students were seriously injured.

Tatalovich said at a June 10 board meeting that the name of Peter Hobart—who was the son of a board member who died 50 years ago from an illness contracted in graduate school—no longer has any connection to today’s community. He added that the students’ names would reflect the district’s diversity.
