Shjon Podein Ends Tenure as SLP Hockey Coach

Podein came aboard as the head coach of the Orioles varsity hockey team two years ago.

After just two seasons as head coach of the St. Louis Park High School boys hockey team, former NHL star Shjon Podein has submitted his resignation.

Podein, a Park resident, took the helm of the Orioles back in 2011. A 10-year veteran of the NHL, Podein helped take the Colorado Avalanche to a Stanley Cup victory in 2001.

According to St. Louis Park resident and Orioles play-by-play announcer John Froom, Podein resigned from the position as he wanted to spend more time with his young children.

In his first year as head coach, Podein helped lead the Orioles to a 17-5 finish. The boys hockey team finished with a 4-20-1 record during the 2012-13 season.

Prior to his hiring in 2011, Podein was long rumored to replace outgoing head coach Tim Donahue. Donahue coached the boys varsity team for 14 seasons before stepping down from his position.
