School Canceled Monday in St. Louis Park With Wind Chill Warning in Effect

The St. Louis Park school district decided to cancel classes Monday due to "severe weather and dangerous wind chills."

All St. Louis Park public schools will be closed Monday due to the "severe weather and dangerous wind chills," according to a bulletin released by the district.

Kids’ Place Childcare will be open at Central and Lenox Community Centers and all elementary schools, but after-school and evening athletics and activities are canceled. Evening Community Education classes will run as scheduled.  Monday evening's school board meeting will be held as scheduled.

Monday's classes will be made up at a later date, as will future days missed for weather reasons, Superintendent Rob Metz wrote in a note on the St. Louis Park website.

Forecasters predict Monday's high will be -7 degrees Fahrenheit, with wind chill values as low as -45 degrees.

A wind chill warning is in effect in Hennepin County from 12 a.m. Monday until Tuesday at noon:

* TIMING: STRONG WINDS PERSIST THROUGH THIS EVENING... CREATING WIDESPREAD BLOWING AND DRIFTING SNOW.

* WINDS/VISIBILITY: WIDESPREAD BLOWING SNOW WILL CREATE LOCAL WHITEOUT CONDITIONS INTO TONIGHT. NORTHWEST WINDS OF 20 TO 30 MPH WITH GUSTS TO 45 MPH ARE EXPECTED... MAINLY THIS AFTERNOON AND EARLY EVENING.

* SNOW ACCUMULATIONS: MINIMAL ADDITIONAL SNOWFALL IS EXPECTED TODAY DURING THE PERIOD OF STRONG WINDS AND WIDESPREAD BLOWING AND DRIFTING SNOW.

* WIND CHILLS: TEMPERATURES WILL DROP TO NEAR ZERO BY EVENING... AND INTO A RANGE FROM 15 TO 20 BELOW ZERO BY MONDAY MORNING. WIND CHILLS OF 35 TO 45 BELOW ZERO ARE EXPECTED FROM LATE THIS AFTERNOON INTO TUESDAY.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...

A WINTER WEATHER ADVISORY FOR BLOWING SNOW MEANS THAT VISIBILITIES WILL BE LIMITED DUE TO STRONG WINDS BLOWING SNOW AROUND. USE CAUTION WHEN TRAVELING... ESPECIALLY IN OPEN AREAS.

A WIND CHILL WARNING MEANS THE COMBINATION OF VERY COLD AIR AND STRONG WINDS WILL CREATE DANGEROUSLY LOW WIND CHILL VALUES. THIS WILL RESULT IN FROST BITE AND LEAD TO HYPOTHERMIA OR DEATH IF PRECAUTIONS ARE NOT TAKEN.
