Ward 3 Primary: Santa, Lindberg Will Face Off in General Election

Council member Sue Santa and challenger Gregg Lindberg will face off in the general election this November.

Updated, 12:30 a.m., Aug. 15: Come November, city council member Sue Santa will have a strong opponent in in Gregg Lindberg.

As of late Tuesday evening, Lindberg had a slight 13-vote lead over Santa in the Ward 3 primary. The two will face off in the fall election.

SUE SANTA              178   39.64%

St. Louis Park's city council primary is being held today. While four seats are up for election in the fall, only council member Sue Santa's seat has enough challengers to merit a primary vote.

If you're in Ward 3, you can vote for Santa or her challengers, Kandi S. Arries and Gregg Lindberg, at your polling place until 8 p.m. today.

As you all know Safety in the Park does not endorse candidates for office.  However, some St. Louis Park residents have asked us for guidance when choosing between three able candidates.  Below is a list of what we know about each candidate with respect to his or her involvement in the freight rail issue.

The Ward 3 candidates are listed in alphabetical order.  Ward 3 consists of  the St. Louis Park Neighborhoods of Amhurst, Minnehaha, Cobblecrest, Aquila, Texa-Tonka, Oak Hill, and Lenox.

All of the candidates oppose the proposed Brunswick Central Relocation plan.

Kandi Arries

  • Charter and current member of the Safety in the Park (SitP) Steering Committee
  • Led the SitP sub committee that located our Pro Bono attorney
  • Authored large portions of SitP’s responses to MnDOT’s Environmental Assessment Worksheet (EAW) and Hennepin County’s  Southwest Light Rail Transit (SWLRT)  - Draft Environmental Impact Statement (DEIS)
  • Was the Lenox representative to MnDOT’s Project Management Team
  • Currently represents Safety in the Park on Met Council’s Community Advisory Committee (CAC)
  • Has  delivered countless flyers in the last 3.5 years
  • Has been a presenter at SitP informational meetings

    • As a St. Louis Park City Council member,  served on the original St. Louis Park sponsored Freight Rail Task Force from 1998-2001
  • Voted in favor of St. Louis Park resolutions:  01-120 (2001), 10-070 (2010) and 11-058 (2012)  All of these resolutions opposed the freight rail re-route
  • Voiced a need for the removal of the switching wye in the Elmwood neighborhood
