St. Louis Park CVB Has First Ever President

John Basill will be coming over from a job in Eagan.

St. Louis Park's new Convention and Vistors Bureau now has its first president.

John Basill, a 20-year resident of St. Louis Park who served on City Council from 2003 to 2009, will be taking the helm on July 25. He will be coming over from Advantage Management Corporation in Eagan, where he served as vice president.

“I look forward with strong optimism to promoting, marketing and developing a regional and national brand presence for St. Louis Park,” Basill said in a statement. “We want to increase the utilization of our business and community assets that contribute to the vibrancy of St. Louis Park, and we need to educate people so that they know it’s a great day to come to St. Louis Park whether it is to stay for leisure, a business meeting or to hold an event.”

The new CVB was formally established in December with the implementation of a 3 percent lodging tax. Some local hotel owners , but city leaders said the bureau will help them attract new visitors to the area.

"We have so many aspects (of the city) we can be further promoting," said St. Louis Park Economic Development Coordinator Greg Hunt in a previous interview.

So no actual destination marketing experience? Serving on the city council may make you knowledgeable about the city street names but it doesn't give you the credetials to run a destination marketing organization. I give him one year before the hoteliers sniff him out.

John Basill will do a great job, Saying he will not last one year is a disservice to John and the people who hired him. It's unfortunate that people don't do their homework before they make disparaging comments about others.

Darien, Can you spell 'cronyism'? The city manager and mayor hand picked their politcal crony WITH NO EXPERIENCE WHATSOEVER! If you want to find our wonderful CVB leader, just go to the Rec Center or to Bunny's -- he is there coaching hockey there just about every day and holding down a bar stool -- seems his job isn't too demanding...note, after a year of his 'leadership', the only thing that has changed is that your taxes have paid for another needless government job.
