SLP Council Votes Unanimously to Oppose Freight Rail Relocation

The Met Council is expected to make a decision about co-location versus relocation in St. Louis Park later this month.

The St. Louis Park city council voted unanimously last week to support the co-location of the city’s freight rail tracks with the Southwest Transitway.

A letter detailing the council's viewpoint and pronouncing that the city “does not support any of the options to relocate freight rail in St. Louis Park” has been sent to the Met Council.

A decision from the Met Council about co-location—along with cost estimates—is expected later this month.

"It's been a difficult process and we tried to draft a letter by committee, which is always tough," mayor Jeff Jacobs said shortly before the July 8 vote.

The council's decision does not come as a surprise; the final letter to the Met Council contains only minor language discrepancies from a draft letter discussed at a late June council meeting.

In a work session before the vote, Anne Mavity was the only council member to express major reservations about the decision, according to city staff.

“I believe co-location can be viable, but I don’t think it’s viable unless we have a grade-separation for traffic to get through,” she said during a June work session

The Met Council will hold an open house and a Q and A session starting 4:30 p.m. Thursday at St. Louis Park High School.
