School Board Approves Eliot Sale

A plan to turn the site into a multi-family housing complex still needs City Council approval.

The St. Louis Park School Board last week approved the sale of the vacant Eliot School building, which is set to become a multi-family housing complex.

The $2 million deal still needs City Council approval, and that process could take up to 15 months as the city works with developer Eliot Parks Partners, LLC, to create a detailed plan for the 4.25-acre site, said Garfield Clark, a real estate agent who worked with the district on the sale.

Clark said the initial plan from Eliot Parks Partners, LLC, meets guidelines for the site that were by the council. Those guidelines called for a residential development with six to 30 units per acre, with a mix of condominiums, town homes and single-family housing. Specific plans from the developer have not been presented yet.

The building, which has been vacant since February 2010, is roughly 100 years old and does not meet current safety and accessibility standards for a school.

“It has outlived its usefulness for the district,” Clark said.
