Safety in the Park Hosts Open Houses in Fight Against Freight Rail Re-Location

The neighborhood group held two open houses on Thursday and Saturday to discuss the Met Council's proposals to re-locate freight rail lines.

Safety in the Park, the neighborhood group opposing the re-routing of freight rail in St. Louis Park, held two informational meetings to discuss the Metropolitan Council's   plans for the Southwest Light Rail Transitway corridor.

More than 120 St. Louis Park residents turned out for the two-hour meetings, held Thursday and Saturday at the fire station. The presentations included maps, illustrations, historical references and question-and-answer periods.

The Safety in the Park group asked attendees to submit form letters expressing "dismay and frustration" about the possibility of re-routed freight rail lines to members of the Met Council and city council members.

The Met Council is expected to make a decision about re-routing by August.

A separate open house on Thursday in St. Louis Park centered on light-rail station locations. The city council and the school board will hold a joint meeting on July 1 to discuss the light rail/freight line issue.
