Do You Want a Steel Keepsake from the Collapsed I-35W Bridge?

Pieces of the mangled steel will be released later in August or early September, according to MagicValley.com.

Six years ago today the Interstate 35W bridge spanning the Mississippi River collapsed during rush hour, killing 13 and injuring 145 others. And soon, pieces of the bridge will be released.

According to a MagicValley.com article, the Minnesota Department of Transportation announced that steel pieces from the collapsed bridge will be released in late August or early September.

Survivors, historians, engineers and even legislators have shown interest in getting a piece. Rep. Ryan Winkler (D-Golden Valley/St. Louis Park) said he hopes to secure a piece of steel for his office, according to the article:

"It's something that we need to remember," Winkler said in the article. "Having a piece of the steel will be a reminder to public officials of the need to take care of public safety."

Beyond a few groups of recipients spelled out in new law, MnDOT has discretion about who can have a remnant, the article said. But, survivors would like the pieces of history to be kept to those affected by the collapse. MnDOT will have to make the call.
