City Filing Period Open, One Incumbent Says He's Out

Phil Finkelstein will not be running in 2011.

The day before the filing period for the 2011 St. Louis Park city election began, one current City Council member announced that he would not be running again.

, who holds one of two at-large spots on the council, said Monday he has two more important “constituents” to attend to—namely, his wife and his new granddaughter.

“It’s just time,” said Finkelstein, who is nearing the end of his second four-year term.

While Finkelstein’s seat will be open in the fall, the two other current council members up for election this year—Mayor Jeff Jacobs and at-large councilman Paul Omodt—said they plan on running again. None of the other four council seats are up for election this time around.

The 2011 city election is scheduled for Nov. 8. If more than two people file for any one seat, a primary election will be held Aug. 9. For information on how to file, see the city’s website. Those interested have until May 31 to file.
