Walter Thompson III is accused of beating and possibly kicking his long-time girlfriend to death during a fight, and recruiting the help of his daughter and sister to dispose of the body behind a Cedar Lake Road industrial business.

Update: $2M Bail for Accused Killer; $10K for Sister, Daughter Charged with Aiding Him

Thompson, 54, has been charged with second-degree murder for his role in the death of Nerissa Annette Shaw, 46, of Minneapolis. Thompson’s 25-year-old daughter, Rachel Lee Thompson of Minneapolis, and his 53-year-old sister, Senaca Ann Thompson of Brooklyn Center, have been charged with felony accomplice after the fact.

Thompson has a lengthy criminal rap sheet (detailed below), including multiple charges of domestic abuse against Shaw. In 2011 Shaw received an order of protection against him; he was convicted of violating the order in 2012.

According to the criminal complaint:

A relative told police that for about two weeks before Shaw’s death, she lived with the relative because Thompson had beaten her up, causing significant facial injuries, and threatened to kill her. Thompson told police that Shaw came to his Minneapolis apartment at 15 East Grant Street on Sept. 13, where they drank together.

Thompson’s daughter said she came to her father’s apartment the evening of Sept. 12 and found him with a swollen hand and “more depressed than usual,” according to the criminal complaint.

In Thompson’s apartment, police found medication in Shaw’s name, a blood-dark substance in the shower drain and on his mattress and a journal in which he wrote about his violent history with Shaw.

On Sept. 13, at her father’s request, Rachel Thompson brought him a “large container” but he did not invite her into his home.

Two days later, she returned to the apartment, accompanied by her aunt Senaca, to help him move the container. It was now full and heavy, the strong smell of bleach overriden by something foul.

Walter Thompson helped them push the container into his daughter’s car, which the three drove to his sister’s Brooklyn Center apartment.

Surveillance footage from Thompson’s apartment building shows him and two women moving a large, heavy storage bin. In the videotape, the bin’s cover opens to reveal a swath of distinctively designed purple fabric that police said matched that found under Shaw’s body on Cedar Lake Road.

Later on Sept. 15, the three drove with the container to St. Louis Park, where Thompson got out of the car and emptied the container, Rachel Thompson told police. The container was taken to Senaca Thompson’s apartment.

Shaw’s naked body was found by an employee of Angstrom Analytical Inc. on Sept. 17.

The medical examiner ruled that Shaw was killed from multiple blunt force injuries to the face. Her jaw was fractured; her left kidney, right ear and liver were lacerated and her throat was marked by petechial hemmorhages, indicative of strangulation. Her ribs appeared to have been fractured after death. The medical examiner said something stronger than fists must have been used to cause the injuries; she was likely kicked or stomped on.

On Tuesday, once news reports started to appear about the body found in St. Louis Park, Walter Thompson went to his sister’s apartment to meet with her and his daughter.

Thompson apologized to his daughter, saying “he had made a mistake and it was an accident,” she later told police.

She told him she was scared because she had seen “that shit.”

Her father told her to drive off somewhere, but her aunt calmed her down and told her not to worry, that they’d “fix it,” that the police didn’t have the container.

The three Thompsons are expected to make their first court appearance on Monday. Walter Thompson faces up to 40 years behind bars. His daughter and sister face up to 20 years.

First you kill your girlfriend, then you ask your daughter and your sister to help you cover up the crime. You took a life, and you have now ruined your daughters life as well as your sisters that took brains. I can't wait to hear what you have to say in court.

with this rap where do you think it is going to end up but with this woman dead. why wasnt he put away a long time ago this pattern is classic for domestic violence gone from bad to worse.

one other thing to the editor can you reread this article and check your dates the timeline makes no sense.

Thompson and his relatives cannot even be termed a family. It's more like yet another case of urban pathology, where the norms of civilized society are light years away from these people. I am all for giving the authority to judges/law enforcement to forcibly sterilize some of these families... otherwise their aberrant behavior will be passed along to any of their offspring.
Mike B. September 21, 2013 at 12:59 PM
Troy, this Thompson character and his deranged relatives should not be given the opportunity to say anything. I would put muzzles on them.

Troy, Walter Thompson gave the police a different story, with a different timeline, than his daughter did. The dates in the story request what each told police.

I do think the daughter and sister must have had some fear of him after he killed the girlfriend; however, it seems they must have had some time where they could have gone to the police and turned him in. Why a case like this with a history like this is not being charged as 1st degree murder I do not know. The medical examiners report seems to show that he was intent on killing her. Now, the people of Minnesota can spend millions in his defense, appeals, and housing for the several decades.

Thompson, his sister, and daughter will certainly be chastised by their friends in the Shorewood Garden Club and the Minnesota Symphony Guild over this transgression.

That guy looks like he's said, " I don't know what you're talking about..." way too many times.

I am praying that they change the charge to first degree, this coward had 2 weeks of planning...... he had no remorse for the woman he was suppose to love, WE LOVED HER!!! WE will not allow her to be forgotten!
Troy Shaw September 22, 2013 at 02:20 AM
I am wondering the same thing. Let's just pray that this time he doesn't get to slip through the cracks. His accomplices to. We didn't know the gravity of what had been done to her or who was involved until it came out in the news. we figured somebody helped him but wow his sister and his own daughter. We still don't really know what day she died on for sure either. Editor that was why i said what i said previously because the way it is written gives conflicting dates so....
Troy Shaw September 22, 2013 at 02:23 AM
So if i am reading this correctly it looks like he actually killed her on the 12th and enlisted his family on the 13th.
Troy Shaw September 22, 2013 at 02:33 AM
@ mike b i just want to know what happened to my aunt. I would like to do a few other things to but.....I am a law abiding citizen now but i can hope that their life behinds bars is made real miserable for him and the women too.
Troy Shaw September 22, 2013 at 02:40 AM
@sharon you and i both know why just like you said this was classic domestic abuse but that also means the women end up to scared to come to court because with the way things are the system tends to protect the abuser more than the victim. There has to be better laws created to protect battered women and the police need better training on how to deal with and identifying the battered woman syndrome.

If this man had so many violations - why was he ever allowed out of jail - the 3 of them should get "LIFE"
Lxix Isee September 22, 2013 at 06:21 PM
A friend will help you move, a good friend will help you move a body.
Carolyn Brack-Jackson September 23, 2013 at 09:05 AM
This sister and daughter knew what time it was, and they did the wrong thing anyway! I hope they get the maximum sentence for their deeds!
Edmund Solari September 23, 2013 at 11:03 AM
Why was he walking the streets and not in jail ? why would she go near this guy with his past beatings of her ?
Mrs. G. September 23, 2013 at 04:59 PM
Makes me surprised that I really don't have the worce in laws in history!
Mongo September 23, 2013 at 05:01 PM
His criminal record looks pretty clean to the authorities. After all, he was free and not locked up for former charges. "What where they thinking?"
Southpaw September 24, 2013 at 09:48 AM
More pieces of sh*t walking the streets. It's always amazing to me that some dumb-ass woman will stay with some p.o.s. coward who threatens to kill her.
Daniel September 24, 2013 at 12:46 PM
People keep asking why this man was on the street after so many violations. The answer is that he is the rule not the exception. Liberal Minnesota wants to boast to the rest of the nation how they have the second lowest prison population. All that really means is that the criminals do little to no time in Minnesota. I have never seen a state as expert at manipulating the numbers to put itself in a favorable light.
Brandy Miklethun LeShore September 24, 2013 at 05:22 PM
They let this two women out!!!!!!! They were granted such a bull crap bail with no regards to the family sitting right there, to add insult to injury we still have not been able to hold her funeral! Now today they posted bail???? Really? what a messed up system! What are we teaching? My stomach is sick
Troy Shaw September 26, 2013 at 01:43 AM
@southpaw. First off you need to be more respectful of the dead and secondly she wasn't some dumbass woman. She had an education. The is text book domestic abuse syndrome. She was caught up in the cycle. You can try to leave a man like this but then they just stalk you which is what she went through and then lost her place because of all the police calls. I guess she just gave up since the police really weren't a whole lot of help. I will say this these type of men make it their business to alienate them from their family so in their mind they have no one to turn to. For us she never came around anymore and when she got with him her whole demeaner changed and she drank more and more which we really didn't have a tolerance for either, so that kept her away too. We loved her and she will be missed. I do agree he is a pos and i am sure that when he gets to prison the inmates there will tell him about himself and so whatever life he has left it will be miserable. Because real men don't believe in hitting women and have no tolerance for a punk that does.
Troy Shaw September 26, 2013 at 01:51 AM
@ Daniel I guess i didn't know the stats but one thing i do know is that things have to change if men keep getting away with murdering and beating on us humanity will cease to exist because men who will carry the babies you men not!!!
Troy Shaw September 26, 2013 at 02:00 AM
The sister had the audacity to say she needed to be out of jail because she just had back surgery. She wasn't thinking about her back when she was pushing that large and heavy container to Rachels car. Rachel's lawyer said she is going to school to be a nurse hope she knows that is down the drain now. Society is unforgiving when it comes to felonies no matter what the circumstances may be.
